šŸ”§ BUILD #imwithher. Frankā€™s ā€˜07 Prius adventures.

General Information

Bought a Prius. Itā€™s exactly what I thought it would be. Like driving a washing machine. No thrills. All the economy.

Basics;

2007 Toyota Prius Base. 166,000 miles. Ex Lake County forest preserve vehicle. Came on brand new Goodyear tires, full tank of fuel and like 100 miles since the last service for $3,500. Everything works. No rust. Put 218 miles on it since yesterday AM. Averaging 51.2mpg. Most of that was with a passenger and trunk full of Costco purchases.

The purpose of this thing is to be a daily driver, and for me thatā€™s a big ask. It has a hitch on it with 1ā€ receiver for a bike rack, Iā€™ll add wiring to tow my 5x8 trailer. The rear suspension is sitting about 1ā€ lower than stock. From what Iā€™ve seen itā€™s a pretty common thing. A company in California used to convert these 2nd gens to plug-in hybrids, and used a local spring align type company to make the HD rear springs for the added battery packs they used. That company still makes the springs for customers if they ask so Iā€™ll be giving them a call tomorrow. Itā€™ll end up going from like 1ā€ of sag to about 3/4ā€ above stock ride height and is a stiffer spring. Perfect for packing full of stuff or trailer tongue weight. Figure Iā€™ll order new struts as well since Iā€™ll have them apart anyways.

Rear suspension upgrades, trailer wiring, window tint and regular maintenance is about all this will see. I imagine the thread will just be filled with pictures of me doing things in a Prius people donā€™t do in a 1500 pickup.

Is there a reasonable way to get this battery to me? Just bring the whole thing and a few cells with it and I'll have it just as good as a refurb in a couple hours. The key is matching the voltages so the charging system will pick them up and do it's thing again.

That Iā€™m not sure.

Iā€™m debating whether or not I really need a vehicle like this anymore so Iā€™m not putting any money anywhere just yet.

As of now I have a work truck that I use for anything work related (auction inspections, pickup/hauling, etc). Whenever we go shopping we take my wifeā€™s Explorer I bought for her over the summer. And in two weeks we will be bringing all of our animals home from the barn we lease, so that will eliminate that 28 mile round trip 2x/day.

So idk. In all reality outside of work I really donā€™t drive too much, and when I do more than half the time I need a truck bed. The work truck really takes the place of what I originally bought this car for.

I feel this decision pretty big right now. It's so much better to drive around in a nice truck fuck the fuel mileage anyway

I agree, Iā€™d rather be in my truck most of the time. But there is something so nice about something thatā€™s quiet and rides smooth.

But if Iā€™m only going to do 10-12k a year of ā€œpersonalā€ driving, Iā€™ll deal with my truck that gets 20mpg. I also have a habit of siphoning fuel out of stuff I buy to flip into an IBC tote so if I play my cards right I can probably never actually pay for diesel lol.

I would 100% fix and keep the car if sitting didnā€™t absolutely kill these things. The sitting that itā€™s done over the past three months has been the start of these issues.
Correct. But a few hundred into that battery is the difference between somethin you may as well haul to the junkyard or a car you can get a few grand for. People want these hybrids but they get raped for having them fixed because most shops hate wires. I gotta look into what it should pay to rebuild the packs because they only list replacing the whole thing. But I think dealership may possibly be around 10 hours to get in and diag and fix one sooo.

it's nowhere near ten hours, I believe book is 3 total if not less. Toyota isn't fixing cells or looking deep into it, soon as the triangle is on and the code is there that's all they need.

Takes around an hour and half taking the interior parts, removing the 12v, HV lines, removing the HV battery, swapping ECU's and wiring up the HV wires on pack, then reinstalling it, hv wires, interior and 12v. You'll have a weekend replacing cells and conditioning old ones trying to match them all, cleaning all the copper bus bars and reinstalling just to drive it for 2 days and get the light again. Replacing cell by cell just doesn't work well anymore since the batteries are all old. 5-6 years old use to be able to do it, now the last two packs i've done it was a total waste of time.

Idk, the Camry I did a couple weeks ago was in and out in a day and apparently hasn't had an issue yet...

And book only lists pulling the whole pack at 2 or 3 hours. A friend at a Toyota dealership is the one who told me 10 and they only let certified techs have the guts of the batteries. Wether that information is correct or not I don't know, but I know this far the one I rebuilt is chugging along like nothing ever happened.

Iā€™m absolutely going to fix it regardless of whether or not I keep it. The debate turns into HOW I will fix it depending on whether or not I decide Iā€™m keeping it or not. Itā€™s been down for two weeks or so, and I can maybe think of about 200 miles worth of driving I have done ā€œunnecessarilyā€ in my truck.

Ditching this other barn weā€™ve been leading and the 2x/day round trip there to take care of animals is going to eliminate most of my non-work related driving.

Annnnnnd weā€™re back. Finally bit the bullet and ordered a new OEM hybrid battery from Toyota. $1,950 + tax was the cheapest of the seven dealers I called.

Took about five lazy hours installing it and cleaning the battery cooling fan. Not a horrible job. I could see how easy it would be to rebuild one and would consider it in the future.

Currently sitting right at 227,000 miles. Curious to see if thereā€™s any significant economy gain.
