🔧 BUILD I did a thing.. (3 doors, turbo, DCT, not a 3800)

General Information

After talking with the wife and working other things out, we thought I should have something a little more reliable and I’m cool with that. So the Regal idea was tossed out.

Went to Hyundai on Friday after work to have the Kona inspected for the end of lease deal. Test drove a Santa Fe for a possible lease but the numbers were not working.

I then noticed a Veloster in the CPO section. 19, turbo, 7 speed DCT. Took it for a ride and instantly really enjoyed myself. It’s no world beater, but if it didn’t put a smile on my face pushing the gas down. Doesn’t hurt that the front end borrows a lot from the 18 and 19 Sonata which I also owned and really liked.

Got the payments around where we were with the Kona lease so I should be picking it up today hopefully. They are replacing 2 tires since I noticed a gash in the side wall.

Never owned a turbo car before, so wanted to ask how necessary is a catch can.

Forgot to update. Took the car to the body shop last week. They took pics and said so far its probably just bumper and lower facia, but wont really know until they take the parts off. I was told the last time they had a Veloster in the shop, it sat for 3 months waiting for the parts to come in. So I get to keep my car while they wait for the parts to come in.

Maybe I should practice buffing on the fucked up bumper if I can find a spare minute.

Rear end looking better than when I got it. They also did a decent wash as well.

Still gotta get a new plate bracket, and get rid of the stupid dealer sticker and their pin stripes. Kinda wish they did what I mentioned and just make the lower facia all black and skip the silver.

Started getting misfires on cylinder 1. Did some asking on the VT groups and apparently the ignition coils are usually known to act up between 50-60K miles. Im at 53K. :fu:

Prices at parts direct sites for OEM coils are kinda meh.

Dealer wants close to $200 PER coil. Then someone on the group said to reach out to a dude in the group that gets parts at cost. He lives in South Korea and I believe works for Hyundai. So $260 later I have 4 new coils and plugs coming in and should be here by Monday.

It is not bypassing the boost though, that would be incredibly confusing to send the boost that you're releasing back into the same system that is releasing it. It is however, diverting the boost to a different location, which uses a diverter valve or more commonly known as a BOV.

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELL...............................

It actually is recirculated back into the intake.

injen-intake-veloster-turbo-install.jpg

Hose at the bottom curve is connected to the valve. When installing an aftermarket BOV, you cap that part of the intake and remove the hose since it will be vented into the atmosphere. Unless I am totally misreading your post and making it more complicated than it should be.

How do you like it? I'd have an Elantra N for a DD right now if it weren't for the jerkoff dealerships and their "market adjustments".

I really enjoy driving my VT. Its for sure not world beating, but its very planted to the ground, light, and peppy enough to have a spirited drive if I goose it. I usually hear the VT vs the N Velosters are not totally night and day, but differences are for sure felt. If I were to do a DP, plugs, and some form of tune I believe the power would be around stock N levels. At least from what Ive read. Bigger IC and full exhaust could net more, but I dont want to go too crazy. Hell, I am debating on getting the Burger Tuner if I were to do some form of tune just so I can switch back to stock if need be.

I've heard the EN puts down 30-40whp more than the VN. Bigger turbo and what not.

Looks like they do low-low 13s stock, or high 12s in good conditions, and still handle awesome. Seems like a fun car for 34k. I love DCTs too

Really? I was looking and they are both rated at 275 or something. Not saying you are wrong, but thats crazy if they are doing low 13s stock. Hell for 34K, Id get over the ugly exterior IMO and get an Elantra N.

They rate the EN at 275 or 285, but everyone that dynos one ends up seeing that at the wheels. Whereas the VNs would do like 240 at the wheels.

I've seen a number of videos of stock ENs doing low low 13s stock. And one guy got the 2-step and weather perfect and was going 12.80s.

edit: At that power level, it's basically a stock LS1 f-body - but with a DCT and way better suspension/brakes. I bet it's a blast on twisty roads.

Dealer we ordered our Tucson hybrid thru doesn’t do market adjustments. Took like 6 weeks from time of order to delivery.

They are out there. Last I spoke with my sales guy, Patrick Hyundai in Schaumburg was not marking up cars. There are plenty of people online and FB sharing who they purchased a Hyundai from without ADM. It might not be the norm, but it still happens.

Thats where I was last week getting my oil changed and my sales guy was telling me about the recalls for the Elantra Ns, and that the ones they had were plated and sold but waiting for parts. They seem to give good deals hence why we keep going back.

So I got a bitch of an itch to do something, but time hasn’t been plentiful so no full detail. However I did break out the pressure washer, bucket, pinstripe removal tool, and the Ryobi DA polisher.

Started this morning not terrible but pretty dirty and pinstripes from the hood all the way to the hatch almost.

9EF36978-01FF-4ABE-BFA0-F681E2B1A45C.jpeg

Also some dirty ass tires and rims.

E4D16A5E-2F19-47EA-A852-AF4FA2F01737.jpeg

Washed the rims and tires before anything and figured I’d still hit them with the foam canon as I soaked and rinsed her down. Look a lot better after just the rim and tire wash.

Next was to get rid of the pinstripes but didn’t think I’d have enough time and didn’t want it to look goofy if I couldn’t finish in time before work, so I just did the hood section first.

Using this guy.

Went over the passenger side and didn’t realize the drill was on high at first. Noticed the hood was getting a little warm and leaning part of the removal tool imbedded in the paint so I slowed it down and finished up. Driver side had no issues on low and looked pretty good after.

Foamed her up and washed her.

Rinsed and you can see the spot in question for sure.

Tried some clay bar and really didn’t get anywhere.

So I moved onto this guy.

After it was all said and done, this is what I got left with.

Now I just need to dedicate some time to really compound, polish, and wax the entire car.
