It doesn't really matter in theory, but allowing the input shaft to move a little makes life whole lot easier. Got any wheel chocks or a block of wood?
I don't know that it's shady, that's just not an '04 LS1 coil bracket to begin with. That looks like a truck bracket, particularly a Vortec 5300.
