if sprocket misalignment is an issue with a wide chain with 105+ valvestprings....youd figure its an issue at higher tq loads.....and whadya know....all chain drive info out there says maintaining sprocket alignment is critical.

we have MattM's old 2.93 sprockets....with heavy wear on only half the face driving that 1" chain.

keeping em square to each other like the 80e does would mean that each chain link plate/pivot pin would be carrying an equal, lower load. which means less wear/elongation.

my old design for the stator support brace would have helped, undoubtedly, but the primary issue is that the IS has no outboard radial force capacity till it flexes over and hits the channel plate sleeve and starts grinding the Teflon rings.

the thrust washer doesn't help.

GM racings fix? delete 4th and tone wheel to keep tone wheel from hitting case.
reduce the dia of the IS at the Teflon washers (they also had some shafts made with more surface area to grind into the channel plate)

with the outboard bearing, id ont think the stator support will be flexing from the tq loads of pulling the sprocket out of alignment
between the needle bearing supporting the sprocket and the bushing supporting the shaft towards the converter, along with the converters bushing riding on the stator support, the radial load will be way less stressfull than an off axis twisting of the current setup.

the pump shaft has been ground down, and the splines have .030 play on all sides, yet under load we're forcing the IS to ride far enough out of true that the splines ground into the end of the IS ID, the stator support ground away the converter bushing and walked it out, and the IS channel plate surfaces were grinding away while destroying the Teflon rings before it flexed far enough for the tone wheel to clip the very nose of a vb bolt and rip one bolt out which quickly started shredding things.

the driven sprocket is much better supported with the OS bushing and CV tulip bearing taking the outboard radial load at that end, along with the ttgt/bftgt wear pattern being across its whole face, with no appreciable wear difference from inboard to outboard of the tooth face.

I gotta upload something before I can post the pics but gimme a minute

I installed and resized the Teflon IS sealing rings that sit in the channel plate sleeve, they were pretty beatup from grinding against the sleeve.

I managed to find a 2.93 oil scoup over at ray's along with new pan gaskets and a double roller timing chain set....but no channel plates.

so it looks like im tearing into my 98 Riviera trans (which is a good working trans :tear:) or going to the junkyard to strip one down

yay
