🔧 BUILD GTPpower's 05 F-350 6.0 PSD

General Information

I need a way to help me keep track of everything I'm doing to this thing.

I bought it from a dealer on 02/01/17. It needed an oil cooler and possibly a headgasket. I farm and own a construction business, so reliability is a main concern. I took it to a diesel shop a few weeks later to get the following done.

-Headstuds
-4" Turboback Exhaust
-Edge CTS2 Pro with Gearhead Custom tuning
-Edge EGT Probe
-Mishimoto Coolant Filter
-Valvecover Gaskets
-Rear Main Seal
-Updated Oil Cooler
-Rear Cover Gasket
-Updated Turbo Feed Line
-Rocker Box Gasket
-Injector O-ring kit
-Heater Tube O-ring
-Motorcraft Crank Sensor
-Passanger and Driver Glow Plug Harnesses
-Hpop Gasket Kit
-Updated Turbo Oil Drain
-Standpipe & Dummy Plug Kit
-Blue Spring Kit
-6.4 Pushrods
-6.4 Lifters
-Cam position sensor
-Racor Oil and Fuel Filters
-5w-40 Synthetic Oil
-CAT Extended Life Coolant

Well, might have found something. I ohm'd all the solenoids and everything was good. However, cycling 12v to the B solenoid made something happen and it kicked up to 6.2 ohms. It very slowly dropped back to 5.6 eventually after maybe 5 minutes. But it's still supposed to he 4.1 to 4.7.

I applied 12v a few more times, and resistance went back to 4.7.

Maybe that's something???

Anyways, I ordered a new solenoid, harness, gasket, filter and will put it all back together when I arrives. Hopefully this is the problem.

Harness installed

My Amazon seller never shipped the solenoid for some reason. After waiting a week for that to not show up, I canceled and went to my local ford dealer and they were able to get it 3 days later.

Took me awhile to find this information. There was a small washer that's easy to lose called the "forward clutch orfice". In late 04+, they changed the design due to some issues with the washer falling out, to a bolt with the orfice in it. I thought I lost the washer for awhile.

New gasket, filter, and pan on, I put in 8 quarts of mercon SP, and went to start it yesterday. Click click. Batteries dead.

Pulled them out and my load tester said to charge them and test again.

After charging for a bit, they both tested bad.

I let them sit in my garage overnight, and this morning the tester wanted them charged more. So I charged each one for a couple hours, and they both tested good. I put them back in the pickup, fired it up, and let it warm up. Took it for a test drive, and all the gears are working now with no codes.

It might be time for a new battery cable though. This one side is always corroded bad, and it's starting to fall apart.

That cable comes as one assembly. From driver batt across radiator pass batt to starter.

Guys often cut the end off and install the universal battery connections but unless you get the good ones they fall apart.

I like the solder/melt ones then have a thick heat shrink go over it. But it still isn't as nice as stock.

226,026 miles. Oil and filter change, and fuel filters.

It's been a year since I changed oil, and longer since I did fuel filters. Only put 7k miles on it last year.

I used the China fake Ford fuel filters. I'll probably change them at 5k and won't use them again.

Filter media is a little bit different.

Fitment is just a little bit off after measuring.

Also, pulling the skid loader up a big hill, I saw coolant temp rise quickly up to 232°. Heard a "pop" and when I got to my house, coolant under the degas bottle.

I suppose it's probably getting close to headgasket time again. But I've also noticed what I think is an increasing amount of metal on the drain plug. This time, there was even a little sliver.

Could this be the hpop? It has occasionally been doing the long crank, no start, but I don't think I have an oil leak. At warm idle, ipr is at 22% and icp is in the upper 500's just like it has always been. After the long crank without firing, I'll pause briefly, then crank again and it fires up right away.

If I could find a 2017 6.7 for $35k, I think I would jump on that.

And head Gaskets... Again..?

It matters a million who does the work on these. I've got trucks out there I did heads on 13 years ago with 200-300k on them and non issues. Working just as hard as yours...

Chances are your heads/block, but most likely the block is the issue because of how it was prepped....

Almost bought this yesterday.

I offered them $39k, they said they would take $40,775. Still kind of thinking about it, but I would rather buy a tractor instead.

I cut the oil filter open, and I'm seeing small slivers of metal in there.

It does not appear to be magnetic, so I'm wondering what is sticking to the drain plug magnet.

From what I can find online, it looks like something happened with the lpop and it might be eating into the front cover.
