Repairing a small chip in your windshield is indeed possible with a DIY kit, but it also largely depends on various factors - including the size and location of the chip, your comfort level with car diagnostics, your patience, and meticulousness.

If the chip is very small (about the size of a quarter) and is not directly in your line of sight, a DIY kit may well be a cost-effective and sufficient solution. These kits typically involve injecting a resin into the-chipped area that hardens to restore the integrity of the windshield.

However, the procedure requires keen attention to detail and patience, as improperly done repairs can lead to bigger cracks or not properly seal the chip, allowing for further damage down the line. Good lighting and optimal weather conditions are also key to this procedure as the resin needs to dry and cure properly.

In case the chip or crack is larger, located directly in your line of sight, or there are multiple chips, it’s best hiring a professional. They will be able to more effectively stop the spread of the chip and in many case, their work is guaranteed. In certain situations, you might need a windshield replacement rather than a repair, which is something that only a specialist can determine and provide. Plus, some insurance companies cover chip repair (check your policy) so it may not cost you anything.

In conclusion, while a DIY kit may tackle small chips, for larger damages or chips in risky areas, hiring a professional is the safest option.

If the windshield isn't covered under your insurance, shop around for prices. I replaced a side window in my truck and Safelite was a lot more expensive than Fernandez Bros. on Western near Diversey.
