This is utterly ridiculous and shows just how low the IQ is of the people we unfortunately put in office.

Cliffs.... Licence fees double, Gas tax jumps to 44 cents a gallon, licence plate fees jump for normal cars........

Oh and EV car registration Jumps to $1000 dollars a year???? ROFL ROFL ROFL

Yes I will admit we do not pay our fair share and as EV sales grow our registration will have to increase to offset that.... but a proposed $1000 a year? That would be the equivalent of a gas car driving over 40,000 miles a year on the road. It should have been $250 dollar registration or $300 max.

Our Illinois politicians are quite literally brain dead. Throw huge numbers out there that make zero sense showing they did zero research. If this passes I will either not register my car and just gamble driving around... or I will simply register it in Indiana.

As if people already were not running for their lives out of this shit hole.

Also how do you handle plug in hybrids? A Chevy volt can pay tax at the pump and also can drive gas free. How do you classify that car? Is it a regular vehicle or is it an EV?

And if it’s an EV you are charging 1000 a year for a volt? I am laughing but it’s a very nervous laugh.

People already are not going to pay this, so Illinois is just once again hurting themselves. Posts already popping up on the Tesla forums. People saying they will simply register cars out of state with family members.

I plan to do the same. Wife has family in Indiana. If this passed I would just register it at their lake home.

I would just simply register it elsewhere. It would be a pain yes, but way better than paying that money. There was a new update today to this story I just found, and to no ones shock it’s been met with huge back lash. Not just by us Illinois slaves, but by manufacturers as well.

I’m sure the fees will go up. But sounds like continuing to push for such a dramatic and unfounded increase would basically lead to political suicide.

This proposal is just a strawman, with not intentions of getting through. It will be followed with another proposal in six moths with about half the amounts ($0.20 per gallon, $500 for EV cars, etc.). Then no one will complain because it's not as bad as it could have been.

Ill let Illinois people register their cars to. Y Saint John address for $100 a pop

When I was doing some research I am not sure if it’s just as easy as me putting down an address over there and getting a plate. I think I need to show proof of the address. Guessing a bill or something? Which is pretty standard. So that’s why I think people are doing this with family members. Easier to coordinate

Correct. First step would just be to go elsewhere to another state. It sucks because obviously that is more difficult. The alternative is just simply rolling the dice.

The trans am hasn’t been registered in 2 years. Granted this last year is obviously been off the road with the build, but I actually forgot to register it the prior year as the email notification went to my spam.

Zero issues so far. But I do plan to make it legal when it’s done.

In his defense he did also say register in indiana. I don’t think anyone would seriously just not register their car.

$500 makes plenty of sense for an electric car.

A fair even amount makes sense. They need to figure out what an average owner spends on the gas tax.

I could be totally off. But I don’t think you spend 500 a year at the pump in just tax.

Note I am all for paying my share..... but don’t throw out utterly stupid numbers because (they) are ignorant.

Best guess is I spend around $400 not including my boats, lawn mower, sxs or whatever else "miscellaneous" gasoline.

so... 500 isn't too exuberant in my opinion.

Current tax is 19 cents per gallon.

So let’s just assume 16 gallon tank and 25 mpg average for owners. Taking out the very high and very low efficient vehicles.

Also let’s assume 16,000 miles a year

16x25=400 miles

16,000/400 = 40 fill ups.

40 fill ups X 16 gallons = 640 gallons

640 X 19 cents = 122 dollars

If I did my math right..... hence why I am saying they are way way off. Again my numbers are a basic average. People drive more, drive less, drive a Cruze vs a big truck.

meaning, me, personally.

because i actually figured it out.

my truck goes about 17,000 or so miles per year, at likely on average 11 mpg.

17,000 / 11 mpg = 1545 gallons * .19 = ~294$

bmw

15,000/ 25 mpg = 600 gallons * .19 = 114$

294+114 = $408
