HP Omen is about the best cost/performance.

Asus is overpriced and undercooled.

MSI has really slick thin gaming laptops.

Acer has really good cheap entry level offerings.

Stay Ryzen/Intel 5 series or higher. 16GB RAM minimum. SSD minimum as well, NVMe even better. A lot of the lower ends have horrendous displays but if he doesn’t care about brightness or color repro, anything will be fine. nVidia 3050Ti or AMD 5500 or higher for GPU
