🔧 BUILD Ford truck 460

General Information

Poor decisions arr my stock and trade as many of yew know.

I've had it just as long as the Cressida.... used it to flat tow the wagon back from El cajon California up Route 66.

Colorado Ranch truck for the first part of its life only ever seeing shade underneath a tree.
I picked it up from the third owner in trade for a bunch of work on getting an 91 f150 roadworthy to take over hauling garbage to the dump.

I've been collecting crap for this thing forever since before I left California where I snagged all of the Driveline and suspension from a 79 F350 that I really wish I had been able to tow back here with me.....
That gave me one ton disc brake front ttb suspension... with fresh kingpins as well as a 3.55 Dana 60 for the rear with 1 ton Springs all around to replace the 3.73 Dana 60 in it.

Some years ago I scored a pull out from an '89 f super duty, a 460efi with the oil to air cooler and a ZF5 speed trans.

I have the harness but no computer but I figure I'll just run it on a 3800 PCM so that I can make plenty of power.

Anyways on to the photographic story....beginning with where its been staining the driveway rust red....

I did have it running and I got it to move a couple of feet before it stalled and would not start without fuel being sprayed in the carb.
Either the brand new old fuel pump is dead or the carb is plugged.
Either way the 390 Fe is going to the side of the road if no one wants it.

It's about time I got around to this thing.

With a tailwind I was able to get 8 miles per gallon with the 2bbl 390fe, except for when I was coming down the mountain on Highway 8 out of California where I managed to get 20 miles per gallon cuz I left the engine off for a really long time.

With the overdrive gear and the taller rear end I know I should be able to do 12 to 16 like most 88-95 F-superduty's can do....

One thing I learned while I was in California is that the 460 guys would kill power to the four injectors on the bank without the oxygen sensor when they were on the highway for better fuel economy.... at which point you're driving on a 3.8 L 4 cylinder lol

At that point I think I should be able to at least eke out 18 miles per gallon.... with a Tailwind

Engine and trans are in.
Driveshaft bolted to yoke. Need a little adjustment to the pass side and a 1/4in down for trans mount so the tunnel cover clears.
Shifter opening has to be moved rearward for sure.

Custom z bar mount for the zf/460 is pretty close so I can tack it and do a final mockup.

L&L engine mounts tight to crossmember.
Transverse beams under it ready for pivot bushings and radius arms

Exhaust looks good so I'm clear to weld one 2.5inch qr vband and the 3.5 v band. Then it's just final fitment of the drivers side pipe to the merge.

Hoist and chains are gone!

I'll have to see how it's settles and on the hubs/tires but I probably should have cut 1.5 coils.
The 79 had 2inch taller spring pockets in the towers. That was 1 coil.

Looks like 75 to 77ish 460 2wd f250/350 springs are the "correct" ones to have for my reg cab/long bed. Looking at cost I think airsprings are fer me.
I'll get airshocks out back till I get the 79 3.55 d60 n f350 springs ready to toss out back. Though I kinda like keeping the sweet f250 camper special floating overload leaf spring/shackle design and some airbags.....?

Seems kits aren't too bad but I swear I can waterjet my own from grainy pics in my f100 mag

Some of this is quite literally opening 20 year old presents.

I think im gonna get a new pass caliper as it looks like it was rusted to hell upside down in a core bin and is majorly pitted
(catalogs always label it as the wrong side due to the single piston calipers being behind the axle (above steering arm) while the dual piston dayton calipers mount in front)

Kingpins went together perfectly thanks to Sandy and the guys at Opel.

And after tossing on the draglink I definitely need the angled pitman arm the 79 shouldhave had. The 79 f350 extracab I got this stuff off of definitely was wrecked. They did cut and weld the draglink to fit an earlier pitman arm (I kept it and pitman from the 79)

Well 79 was all ps gearboxes.
My 68 manual box has smaller splines.
The one I took off the 79 f350 was definitely a ps earlier straight arm.

The angle of the 79 pitman arm I bought off ebay is matching the 79 f250/350 draglink

So either 650ish for a red top 79 f350 ps box, or I chance this? For under 200
