🔧 BUILD Ford truck 460

General Information

Poor decisions arr my stock and trade as many of yew know.

I've had it just as long as the Cressida.... used it to flat tow the wagon back from El cajon California up Route 66.

Colorado Ranch truck for the first part of its life only ever seeing shade underneath a tree.
I picked it up from the third owner in trade for a bunch of work on getting an 91 f150 roadworthy to take over hauling garbage to the dump.

I've been collecting crap for this thing forever since before I left California where I snagged all of the Driveline and suspension from a 79 F350 that I really wish I had been able to tow back here with me.....
That gave me one ton disc brake front ttb suspension... with fresh kingpins as well as a 3.55 Dana 60 for the rear with 1 ton Springs all around to replace the 3.73 Dana 60 in it.

Some years ago I scored a pull out from an '89 f super duty, a 460efi with the oil to air cooler and a ZF5 speed trans.

I have the harness but no computer but I figure I'll just run it on a 3800 PCM so that I can make plenty of power.

Anyways on to the photographic story....beginning with where its been staining the driveway rust red....

I did have it running and I got it to move a couple of feet before it stalled and would not start without fuel being sprayed in the carb.
Either the brand new old fuel pump is dead or the carb is plugged.
Either way the 390 Fe is going to the side of the road if no one wants it.

It's about time I got around to this thing.

With a tailwind I was able to get 8 miles per gallon with the 2bbl 390fe, except for when I was coming down the mountain on Highway 8 out of California where I managed to get 20 miles per gallon cuz I left the engine off for a really long time.

With the overdrive gear and the taller rear end I know I should be able to do 12 to 16 like most 88-95 F-superduty's can do....

One thing I learned while I was in California is that the 460 guys would kill power to the four injectors on the bank without the oxygen sensor when they were on the highway for better fuel economy.... at which point you're driving on a 3.8 L 4 cylinder lol

At that point I think I should be able to at least eke out 18 miles per gallon.... with a Tailwind

I really wish I coulda kept that 79 f350 when I moved outta cali.

All parts minty as hell. 68, pita.

It's bolt in.
Basically over t he years from 67 onward they found cheaper ways to make things.
My original 68 radius arms are forged.
79 are heavy steel stampings, formed.

Frame brackets changed but you just use the older bushing kit.

Disc brakes mean I need disc hose brackets, probably making these too.

Chriminy im filthy

Large part done got wire wheeled.
Closing up garage to get warm again and finish pulling the cowl plugs and vacuum.

Lotta crap in the cab mount boxes....I know shits gotta be thick in the cowl
Then back to the last of the firewall (may yank booster)

I may not spray it with the semi gloss epoxy black. I might get the rust converter paint for the cab/firewall and just leave it ugly for posterity.

Do you need the enkei style nuts that go inside the holes to center the wheel like go on weld wheels or? I have a bunch of 9/16 shit laying around and I've got a whole set of the long 3 inch Bois but they might be too fat to fit your wheels or have the wrong seat

So like this yeah? Iirc I had to special order these fuckers at 3 bucks a piece and ended up not needing them but I know for certain they're for that era Ford.

Not like the drag wheels where it goes inside the wheel and has a flat washer to torque up against. I probably have some of those around somewhere by they'd be 12 or 14mm and that ain't gonna work.

I can't remember what brand they are but they came from a legit distributor and not online. I know when I got em there was 32 but it'd be a miracle if I find them all lol. You can just have em dude I don't have shit they're gonna fit on and I don't see somebody walking in the door asking for lug nuts for an old highboy anytime soon 😂

Been slowly working the underside.
Still gotta grind off the drum brake hose bracket rivet and move jackstands, blow it off and spray.

Then engine/ trans go in place for the final time

Was gonna just do the important areas of the parts but decided to go wild on everything.

TTB I-beams n radius arms still had cosmoline all over, God I wish I coulda kept that truck.

Ordering a new kingpin kit. The bearings n pins are shit from sitting and the upper bushings are worn oval, lots of new carp.

MuffHugger MuffHugger is a lifesaver, them pineapple ones, cause pineapples lifesavers are the shit

Hanging out in the gayrage

Dropped 500 at rockauto.
02 ford lightning master (1.25inch bore, aluminum to replace old iron)
79 f350 kingpin kit, correct 5spd starter (PMGR from the later 93-97 460efi).
Actual Raybestos hoses (most I've found is china junk)
Backup switch connector, steering shaft coupler, etc.

Having issues with mislabeled dayton calipers, rf labeled as left front, etc.

F150 has (small single piston) caliper behind axle centerline mounted up high to clear the steeringarms, the 250/350 dayton brakes are so huge (12.5" rotors) that the caliper is mounted forward of centerline since steering is behind axle. That's what I believe led to this mislabeled.

Pack of smokes for scale of 35lb caliper.

Why did I go overboard and blast n coat every 79 f350 part?

Finished the ³/8 inch 304ss exh pipes n flanges.
I have a buncha 2.5in 304ss mandrel bends in a bin I've been saving for this heap (for now it'll merge to a 3.5" collector and through the 3.5inch ss mandrel exhaust to a afe 4inch diesel bro muffler.

Have the zf side of my new z bar mount. Now gotta final mount engine/trans to finish it and weld the ball from the 390fe zbar to it.

Engine temporarily in place to verify a few things.

U joint lines up perfectly with 390fe/np435 position. But there is an issue. 89 f450 or Fsuperduty zf5 is a 1410 joint 1 3/16 cap dia
The 68 f250 driveshaft is a 1330 small cap (1.062 cap dia)
No one makes a conversion joint for 1330 to 1410.
Plenty of 1350 to 1410 so obviously the driveshaft needs a 1350 yoke.
Yay

Crossmember.
Looks good, elevation may need to change but only thing off is I need to drill and tap for auxiliary fuel tank skidplate mount.

460 zf5 custom bellhousing z bar mount
Looks good. But I'll wait till it in once and for good.

L&L 460 mounts line up with holes I drilled.

May have an issue with Pitman arm change from 68 to 79 2wd trucks.
Yay.

2.5" 304 manifold flange rings and stubs ready.
S curve right off the pass manifold to clear frame and starter boss.
Drivers side will get a larger s curve before I finish.

I have tons of 3.5 inch 304 pipe and bends.

One of the cats peed on my cardboard.
Guess when I figured out what that smell was?
Yay

This was supposed to be bolt in low fab truck, :nope:

Turns out my zf 5spd has the 1350 yoke, not 1450. Can't seem to find what defines the differences in application but the Spicer 5-460x part number is my 1330 to 1350 that I need.

Didn't wanna pull the center support and whole driveshaft. So I made my own on truck u joint press. Install using old ball joint press.

All done and ready for final install of trans/engine while popping joint into yoke.

Shocks showed up so I can pop all these semi gloss black things together once I crank down the L&L 460 swap mounts.

Hours cut back, so took second jerb. Second job makes more sense than first jerb, I r dumbs, and tired.
And gotta move my giant box home I'm guessing.
Gotta put it together to get more room. Old 68 suspension is at the curb waiting for scrap Valhalla.
