🔧 BUILD Ford truck 460

General Information

Poor decisions arr my stock and trade as many of yew know.

I've had it just as long as the Cressida.... used it to flat tow the wagon back from El cajon California up Route 66.

Colorado Ranch truck for the first part of its life only ever seeing shade underneath a tree.
I picked it up from the third owner in trade for a bunch of work on getting an 91 f150 roadworthy to take over hauling garbage to the dump.

I've been collecting crap for this thing forever since before I left California where I snagged all of the Driveline and suspension from a 79 F350 that I really wish I had been able to tow back here with me.....
That gave me one ton disc brake front ttb suspension... with fresh kingpins as well as a 3.55 Dana 60 for the rear with 1 ton Springs all around to replace the 3.73 Dana 60 in it.

Some years ago I scored a pull out from an '89 f super duty, a 460efi with the oil to air cooler and a ZF5 speed trans.

I have the harness but no computer but I figure I'll just run it on a 3800 PCM so that I can make plenty of power.

Anyways on to the photographic story....beginning with where its been staining the driveway rust red....

I did have it running and I got it to move a couple of feet before it stalled and would not start without fuel being sprayed in the carb.
Either the brand new old fuel pump is dead or the carb is plugged.
Either way the 390 Fe is going to the side of the road if no one wants it.

It's about time I got around to this thing.

With a tailwind I was able to get 8 miles per gallon with the 2bbl 390fe, except for when I was coming down the mountain on Highway 8 out of California where I managed to get 20 miles per gallon cuz I left the engine off for a really long time.

With the overdrive gear and the taller rear end I know I should be able to do 12 to 16 like most 88-95 F-superduty's can do....

One thing I learned while I was in California is that the 460 guys would kill power to the four injectors on the bank without the oxygen sensor when they were on the highway for better fuel economy.... at which point you're driving on a 3.8 L 4 cylinder lol

At that point I think I should be able to at least eke out 18 miles per gallon.... with a Tailwind

Been jostling it around to get yoke centered, the mounts are a hair off from where they are supposed to sit, but the base plates also have the typical bow from welding in the middle....

Made 2 new lifting brackets, found out carb too high for current filter.

I also waterjet a new trans mount plate, the 89 superduty crossmember that's torched off is too thin and rusty.

Looks like Im good to go, gotta settle on elevation but it's set for tacking up.

I'm worried about the 460.

Cam bearings are a known issue and are block destroying.

The squeak noise is consistent and is I'm gonna guess valvetrain speed .

Fuck.

I'd rather have the two 3.8l I4 in a V pattern....7.6L

I'm reading guys machine the cam bearing bore/bores oversize to use 390fe cam bearings with a larger od but same ID.

I wonder if I can fit it on my milling machine table.
Not to derail your thread but what's your opinion on 3800 cam bearings. The engines I've torn apart haven't looked real great but nobody ever talks about it in 3800s. Is it safe to assume it's like the El esses and if you don't look at them they're fine?

If another mother fucker tells me to put an lsux in this thing im gonna remove their eyeballs with a spork
I'd rather throw my gen1 383 at you. It's just sitting in the garage, and that stuff is starting to probably be hipster now. If I ever touch the Le mans again, the thought has most certainly crossed my mind.

Well now I'm positive the starter I grabbed from the junkyard is not a 460 starter.
Ring ground into nose.
On the plus side I think this may have heard while floor running it.

Gonna grind tha hell outta it and retest.

For now I have all the holes drilled, modified two center drills, used hanging engine to provide "yer gonna drill this you dull pos" force.

Drilled to 7/16 for a hair of adjustment.

Have the blue wrench so I can see how many exh manifold bolts I can avoid snapping off.

Had to hack off a boss that was just touching the floor preventing the rear yoke from moving over towards the oem yoke ceterline.

2 snapped off casting dull purple heat. Might try cherry heat somewhere else

So far 2 of 4 pipe to manifold studs came out.
Said fuckit and went glowing hot.
Still came out hard.

Hopefully drivers 2 come out and I'm gonna slap it in as is a d hope a ton of thermal cycling works.

Fawk

Shoulda 3800 swapped it.

Yup not taking manifolds off. Fugg that. I can live with exhaust leaks i guess. It is gonna be carb dor a bit till i get my 3800 efi setup ready to run a bbf v8

I aint drilling out 16 broken exhaust bolts unless the heads are comming off and I can plunge em with the mill.....and maybe a little cam....and some springs....
