🔧 BUILD Ford truck 460

General Information

Poor decisions arr my stock and trade as many of yew know.

I've had it just as long as the Cressida.... used it to flat tow the wagon back from El cajon California up Route 66.

Colorado Ranch truck for the first part of its life only ever seeing shade underneath a tree.
I picked it up from the third owner in trade for a bunch of work on getting an 91 f150 roadworthy to take over hauling garbage to the dump.

I've been collecting crap for this thing forever since before I left California where I snagged all of the Driveline and suspension from a 79 F350 that I really wish I had been able to tow back here with me.....
That gave me one ton disc brake front ttb suspension... with fresh kingpins as well as a 3.55 Dana 60 for the rear with 1 ton Springs all around to replace the 3.73 Dana 60 in it.

Some years ago I scored a pull out from an '89 f super duty, a 460efi with the oil to air cooler and a ZF5 speed trans.

I have the harness but no computer but I figure I'll just run it on a 3800 PCM so that I can make plenty of power.

Anyways on to the photographic story....beginning with where its been staining the driveway rust red....

I did have it running and I got it to move a couple of feet before it stalled and would not start without fuel being sprayed in the carb.
Either the brand new old fuel pump is dead or the carb is plugged.
Either way the 390 Fe is going to the side of the road if no one wants it.

It's about time I got around to this thing.

With a tailwind I was able to get 8 miles per gallon with the 2bbl 390fe, except for when I was coming down the mountain on Highway 8 out of California where I managed to get 20 miles per gallon cuz I left the engine off for a really long time.

With the overdrive gear and the taller rear end I know I should be able to do 12 to 16 like most 88-95 F-superduty's can do....

One thing I learned while I was in California is that the 460 guys would kill power to the four injectors on the bank without the oxygen sensor when they were on the highway for better fuel economy.... at which point you're driving on a 3.8 L 4 cylinder lol

At that point I think I should be able to at least eke out 18 miles per gallon.... with a Tailwind

Thanks Captain Obvious!... I'm glad I took the extra time to rod this thing out and suck out all the goop as it will undoubtedly flush out much faster. I really did need to run mechanics wire around all the water jackets that I could to break up the crap and suck out what I could with a 5/16 Hardline as a vacuum extension.

I have a feeling this thing would have had a major issue with the bores running hot for a long time till all this crap loosened up and flushed out.... I got the jacket drains broken free so I can at least use them in the future.

Plentum to carburetor adapters and spacers are done I definitely need to trim the bottom of the linkage for rail clearance.

Also made a 4150/4160 plate in case I dig out my holley collection before I get around to efi...

I keep wanting to just put 6 fuel injectors in a throttle body set up and running this thing off a 3800 PCM and a 3x/18x wheel in batchfire (no cam sensor needed).

Since timing can be easily controlled with a mechanical and vacuum advance distributor.

I mean I lie to it about half of the fuel and air entering the regal it's no difference doing it with the 460 since it's essentially 2, 3.8L 4 bangers...

Plus it uses all of my tuner boxes lol

Cleaned up the clutch stuff To inspect it better. Everything's in pretty good shape but the friction disc does look to be about 50% worn out.
I'm flipping the ring gear as there's a few damaged teeth on it in one area.

I'm thinking I might just toss it together as is although I've been back-and-forth on spending the 90 bucks on a new clutch disk from a company I've never heard of before...M PACT via rockauto....

There's a good bit of work to do for making the new 460 z bar mount for a hydraulic slave zf 5spd to become mechanical.

Battery mounting area was shot and I didn't want to sawzall the core/hoodlatch support...plus I originally wanted to put the Ranger Brightwork/grill/hl buckets on instead of the white painted camper special stuff.

Core supports not in too bad of shape so I will patch it and the inner Fender skirt...just oil everything else to slow the rust and keep the patina.

I need to straighten a bent hood hinge and weld the loose rivets at the pivots.

With it all off I'm gonna go ahead and drop the 79 f350 disc brake front suspension/ steering/ springs on.

With two pairs of ttb beams I'm may cut and weld em to drop it a hair and not lose compression travel at the crossmember.

Once it's moving I can toss the 79 f350 springs and 3.55 D60 rear in place of the 68 3.73 d60.

Best of each gen.
