My little project today. Really happy with results

600-800-1000-1500 wet sand

blue rouge on cotton wheel

heavy cut compound on foam cut pad

cleaner wax

the headlights will be a springtime deal. They look pretty good, but are on borrowed time since they were rejuvenated with a clear coat by the previous owner and the edges are starting to show

I replaced my stock fogs on the e39 with aftermarket replacements and regretted it quickly. The OEM lights are pretty good at throwing light and really wanted to save these. The aftermarket lights have shitty reflectors, and the lenses crack after about a year.

They look great and it's so worth the effort.

There was only a thin coat of clear on the fogs. Sanded off easy. I’m worried the headlamps are going to take a lot longer

Get a drill attachment and sanding discs. That makes the job a lot quicker. I have used the 3M kit with the drill before. It is expensive compared to other options. But it works great and the headlights didn't even take a half hour to do.
