🔧 BUILD Five-0’s 86 Notcho

General Information

Say hello to Notcho 2.0. Happened much faster than I thought, but I’ll take it. This is what I was after all along. Great patina, but literally no actual rust. You could eat off the bottom of this thing.

Original 5.0, but swapped out to a 93 block and T-5. This car used to be local and then spent some time in Texas and I bought it off that guy and had it shipped here.

Plans are to leave the paint as-is, tidy up the engine bay and interior and just drive it until I decide to up the power.

It runs great WOT and really nothing I can’t live with per-say. But it’s tuned rich right now and it likes to occasionally die when I’m parking and then start to flood and becomes hard to re-start. Also bucks at low speeds. I wanted to just make it more pleasant to drive and remove the annoyances… and turn it up

Your cranking PWs may be too high at the higher temperatures.

In terms of the low RPM idle it may be related to your IAC Counts. I will say that there's closed loop idle control in Megasquirt and I disabled it because I fuckin hated it. Your injectors may not be well tuned either, you may need to customize your idle pusle widths to account for dead time.

I have nothing on the tune. I asked a couple times for any files he may have and never got anything. I don’t even know how to access them or how to plug into the thing.
If you have a serial cable and a serial port you can use Tuner Studio to download the tune from your laptop. BE VERY CAREFUL because you can over write the tune if you click the wrong button.

I may have that in my glovebox, I'll double check. No idea where the port would be. Plus it's been wire tucked so it could literally be anywhere. Chances are I would overwrite the tune. I'm a mechanical engineer, this software stuff is way over my head (But don't tell that to the software business's I'm trying to get into for an industry change :ROFLMAO:).

Should be another piece a DB9 male to DB9 male cable at least with the MS2. Wonder if there's a break out somewhere in the harness? That'd make sense. Look for a shielded cable.

ED:This is the cable, do you see the red/black/orange stub? I believe that would be your break out. There should be an RS-232 to a microphone type cable. This is a version with a USB adapter.

Gotta be behind a kick panel or something. The entire interior is coming out for the heater core and re-dye so I’ll find it

Since I have this all apart I’m taking the time to make some cosmetic upgrades and deep cleaning.

I wanted to put a set of pace car trim in. It’s a dark engine turned and reminded me of my old 08 Bullitt dash. It has some wear and small scratches that I can’t fix, but I deep cleaned it, re-did the silver with chrome paint pen, put in new vent foam and felt. I also used the chrome paint pen on the AFR and boost gauge trim ring as they were mismatched originally.

I’ve been working on the car a lot this week. Got the new dash prepped and found out it was a convertible dash a couple weeks ago. So I ordered the trim piece and will just have a dummy switch in its place. Maybe I’ll use if for some stealth nitrous in the future, lol.

In hopes of avoiding the typical dash crack in the future I filled that section in with a ton of plastic JB weld and some fiberglass mesh. I figure it can’t hurt. Also filled in some past pillar pod holes. Not going for perfection here, just clean and presentable.

Taking the day off today to actually do the heater core job finally. I probably should have just done that and left the interior alone, too late!

Got the dash back in and the new dash pad. Came out really nice with the pace car trim. Simple, but different. Also put new knobs on the HVAC controls, LEDs in the cluster, and a new rear view mirror. Best part of all the car still runs and the heat works without the smell of antifreeze. Started on changing the seat belts out and of course the ones in the floor are stripped and seized. Ground the sides flat, breaker bar, all to no avail ??‍♂️
