Nissan revealed earlier this year that they will be making a competitive entry into the FIA GT Championship for 2010 with a Nissan R35 GT-R built to GT1 specifications. In collaboration with NISMO and Gigawave Motorsports the car will be entered into four races in 2009 for testing and development. The first race it will be entered into is Silverstone, round 1 on May 3rd 2009.

Today specifications are out and the car was photographed testing at the Paul Ricard HTTT facility in the south of France during the media function and first official test day for the 2009 championship season.

As predicted the GT1 GT-R features a front mounted naturally aspirated V8 engine, a VK56DE with a displacement of 5,552cc. The VK develops 600hp and more than 650Nm of torque. It’s mated to a Ricardo 6 speed transaxle via a 5.5″ carbon triple plate clutch. All this drives only the rear wheels. Carbon brakes and pads all round are clamped by 6 piston front and 6 piston rear calipers. Putting the power to the ground are 18″ x 13″ Rays forged wheels all round.

FIA currently defines two categories of GT cars: GT1, or Grand Touring Cars, and GT2, or Series Grand Touring Cars. Each category has an annual driver champion, team champion, and manufacturer champion. Both categories are based on production road car designs, which must be produced in a minimum quantity of 25 examples to qualify. Both types may undergo significant modifications from the road car they are based on, but GT1 allows the use of exotic materials, better aerodynamics, larger brakes, wider tires and larger engine admission restrictors.

For the 2006 season, the FIA has created a new class called GT3. GT3 cars are even closer to their production counterparts and are very simply racetrack prepared with the essentials (rollcages for safety, stripped interiors, race spec fuel tanks, etc.). Prestigious motorsports makes such as Aston Martin, Chevrolet, Dodge, Lamborghini, Ascari and Maserati take part in FIA GT3 European Championship, a support series in some rounds of the main championship.

The FIA defines a GT car as "an open or closed automobile which has no more than one door on each side and a minimum of two seats situated one on each side of the longitudinal centre line of the car; these two seats must be crossed by the same transversal plane. This car must be able to be used perfectly legally on the open road, and adapted for racing on circuits or closed courses."

All races in the FIA GT Championship were of endurance type, a full race distance lasting a minimum of 500km or a maximum of three hours, with the exception of the Spa 24 Hours and the exhibition Mil Milhas Brasileiras, which is run over a thousand miles and was planned to be a round of the championship in 2007. However, with the release of the 2007 FIA GT Championship season schedule and rules, the FIA GT series becomes more of a sprint race event, with all races being a maximum of 2 hours with the exception of the Spa 24 Hours, and no Mil Milhas on the schedule.

i would think GT3 would be cooler but i'm sure there is too much going on with the GTR to do such a thing...

i think most of those "imports" go w/ v8s.

back in the day, the skylines were banned from racing (mainly the r32) b/c they kicked the shit out of anything they were put against

I think Nissan just has a proven motor program already going, and it wouldnt make a bunch of sense to try and develop another just for this car. Not to mention losing the AWD drops quite a few pounds.

Well unless you’ve been buying property in exclusive under-rock-locations lately I’m sure you know that Nissan Motorsports NISMO and Gigawave Motorsports have partnered in the entry of a 2010 GT1 specification Nissan GT-R into four races in this years FIA GT series.

The first offical FIA GT test session wrapped up on Tuesday last week and we all got a great look at the Nismo GT1 GT-R in detail thanks to various media in attendance on the day.

How’d the GT-R do though? Yes it’s just a test day but the laps were timed and that includes the 2010 FIA GT1 spec GT-R. All up 100 (!) laps were run over the two days of testing on the Paul Ricard circuit. Keeping in mind that the 2010 FIA GT1 specification limits the modifications that the cars may run versus the 2009 GT1 specification you musn’t compare it to current laptimes.

That being said here are the best lap times for the three 2010 GT1 cars from the first official test days:

1. 2010 GT1 Nismo / Gigawave Nissan R35 GT-R - 2:05.447
2. 2010 GT1 Matech Ford GT - 2.05.948
3. 2010 GT1 VDS Ford GT - 2.07.401

So Nissan is going to compete with the Corvette C6R in GT1 on American Lemans? Currently Corvette is the only one in the GT1 class.
