I did 38 miles on Sunday. 2hrs 50min worth around most of lake county trails and I was beat. Could not imagine 50 miles. Mixing in some road helps chunk the miles down.

So I did a 50 mile gravel race up north of Hayward, WI on Sunday. Most of these I do are 63 miles so I thought this would be pretty easy. I was sorely mistaken. 50 miles of ATV trails, logging roads and some of the roughest gravel roads I’ve ever been on. I ran 43c knobby tires and wish I had more. Going 30mph downhill into sandy loose washed out gravel makes your butthole pucker real quick. I’ve done events with bigger climbs than this one but they have pavement sections or flats where you could recover. This was 50 miles of downhill into uphills. Went in with the strategy of not blowing my legs up and I thought I went heavy enough on my electrolyte mix but I did not. At exactly mile 49 there was one final hill and my legs both locked up solid. Thighs, calves everything cramped solid. It was wild. I straight leg waddled to the top of the hill and then managed to take more drinks and punch and shake the cramps out. Only lost one position to that so it worked out. I’ve only been ā€œcyclingā€ a year so I’m not too hard on myself. I finish at the top of the bottom 1/3 fairly consistently so I mostly set goals for myself and try to beat them. I wanted to finish in less than 4 hours and finished in 3:42. This was 50 miles of getting my ass kicked. It was so rough I lost a water bottle somewhere and didn’t even realize it. Here’s 2 still from the worlds worst videos my parents took because they’ll start recording then think it’s not me so they cut them off.

These events are a lot of fun, I may have one more in October. Both options are in Wisconsin and it will probably come down to which one fits my schedule better. My biggest problem aside from not having calves like tree trunks or the cardio base some of these people have is that there just isn’t anywhere around here to train on hills like this. The indoor trainer is boring especially when I could be riding outside, but I think I’m going to start training hills indoor once a week and then probably 3 nights a week over winter. Grade chart from Sunday.

This one Sunday claimed 2,800 feet but I don’t think it calculated correctly because it was mostly an out and back route so I got to see these 22 year kids flying by on their way back as I’m dying at the halfway point.

The one in March looks much more manageable in hindsight.

I am at Indianapolis doing the US Masters Nationals. I did 500 free and 100 IM today, for me I did well. I got in at about quarter to one in the morning from Wisconsin, woke up at 7 AM and got there with 3 minutes left on the warm up. I managed to get in 100ish yards, then go for the 500. Way short. I've never done salt water before and it was warmer than I'm used to, quite a bit of adjustment. Sure as hell felt like a "fast" pool honestly. I can't explain it, and I don't know if it was in my head. I've heard of people talk about that before. I may have pulled back on the 500 because I was unfamiliar with the water, but I managed an 8:32 on it. I seeded in at 8:20, realistically said 8:30 and it was close enough for me considering the minimal stretching etc. I did and the unfamiliar water. Second event after a good bit of waiting was 100IM. I was nervous on times for that but man I was in the high 1:35s after being in the low 1:39s. Looking at the results I DQed, which is aggravating but I'm excited that the time was there. I'm curious what they got me for though.

Knocked 3 seconds off my 50 fly today, :fy: Wound up in the low 46s down from mid 49s. I'll take it. I was the slowest person in my age group by a lot, but don't care I made it, I did it and that was a lot. I had good starts and have lots of headroom as well. Supposedly the salt water can be more bouyant, I'm not sure if that's really a thing or not but man it felt like it. Definitely felt faster and easier. The other plus side is I feel pretty good after.

If you’re averaging 19.7 I’m not towing you anywhere šŸ˜‚. I ride a lot but I was mostly sedentary for 10 years prior so I’m not fast. Just had to take a week or so off with a viral thing and I’m still dragging ass.

Daughter is in town for the night. She got up early and went to work out at Lifetime in Burr Ridge. She used to work at that location until 2 years ago when she moved to St Louis and went to work for Lifetime down there. She said she has never felt to uncomfortable working out. A group of around 10 men starring at her the whole time. She said she was even doing cable rows and one of them started doing pushups right next to her. She actually had to ask him to move so she could exit the machine. Manager who wouldn’t give a last name said she could file a police report. Really?? So I guess it’s time to spread the word that it’s not women friendly at that lifetime.
