I thought they had to produce parts for so many years after by law?

They are suppose to keep a supply of parts for 10 years. Having a car that hasn't been made for 21 years, I can tell you that nearly all of the parts were readily available for roughly 16 years. The 1988 Fiero is actually the worst as they used single-use parts for the suspension and brakes. The OEM parts are all but gone and the aftermarket is limited due to the limited number of 1988's made. At present there are a few places that still have factory OEM parts and there are many aftermarket parts still available. Although some of the aftermarket parts are not up to the same quality level as the original OEM parts, They do make them.
There are still a few parts available thru GM only because the supply never was depleated or that the exact same part has been used on newer vehicles which keeps them in supply.

Since GM was so big into "clone" cars between the brands, Many parts for Pontiac's will be around for quite a while. Only the "single model" vehicles like the Solstice/Sky, G8, and GTO may have issues when they get older.

This will leave a bad taste in my mouth for years to come... it has to be the most stupid of all of the options available to GM...

Why shutter a division that has historical implications in favor of a redundant niche brand?

GMC - roll a few unique vehicles from GMC into Chevy (really only Topkick and Envoy) and shutter brand.

Pontiac - dump unneeded/copied vehicles (G3 and G5, Torrent) and soup up the unique vehicles in that Brand (Solstice and G6 - G8 already where it needs to be) Bring back Firebird/Trans Am based on Zeta Platform

Cadillac - keep as super-luxury cars

Buick - keep as mid-level to luxury

Chevrolet - keep as general purpose with trucks (performance nameplates with SS still allowed)

There is still so much potential and life in the Pontiac name, however, they wish to abandon it and its history... Saturn is likely to be sold, and Hummer really isn't needed/can be sold off possibly. Saab could be spun off as a different company.

This Government mandated restructuring is bullshit, and reeks of Socialism...

To offer a different opinion,GM probably did this because of dealer resistance; Most dealers of Pontiacs sell Buicks or GMCs too,so killing Pontiac isn't as devastating as losing either or both Buick/GMC truck. In the rural parts of the country GMCs are sold exclusively in some places-theres a GMC only dealer in Antioch I pass by when I see a friend up there.

I believe Pontiac was easier to kill because not as many dealers will sue for franchise claims versus the other brands.Shutting down Buick and GMC make more sense, except the dealers that sell both will sue the pants off of GM ,and the fees will put the General right back in Bankruptcy court.
Pontiac was the easiest to kill, and judging by the reaction from my car-ignorant friends,it won't be missed.
I don't know what's sadder-Pontiac being done,or that lay people are cheering its demise.

all this is a product of all the american car makers producing crap cars for at least 20 years. when you sell 50% of your products to fleets at a big discount, then have to give big incentives to the customer how can you make money.
The two smallest auto makers are the only ones making any money are honda and bmw.
maybe because they know how to make a good car that will last.
Hummer, saturn, and saab are next on the choping block. so your hopes for the sky are slim.
