If you run E85 on the octane rating engines, you will get about 95. The octane engines can't account for the cooling effects of ethanol very well.
It's effective octane is more like 105 and it's blending octane (for low levels blends like E10) is more like 115.
If E85 were only 94-95, it would not perform way better than 93 premium.
