They sold the 1997–2003 Chevrolet Malibu into 2004–2005 as the Chevrolet Classic.... The 'Classic' Came only as a 4 cylinder and only for 2004 and 2005, while the 97-03 never came with a 4 cylinder.

The 04+ Malibu's were the first 'boxier' style (6th generation) and came in 4 cyl, and 2 different V-6's

Needless to say, when I picked up brake pads for a 2004 Malibu 4 cylinder, we were given the wrong parts, went back to find they were the same pads as the 97-03 style...

Autozone identifies the car as a Chevrolet Malibu with the trim level 'classic', Advanced Identified the car as a "Chevrolet Classic"

Why the hell did Chevrolet sell 2 different kinds of Malibu's in 2004 and 2005...? Surplus body's? wtf?

GM redesigned the Malibu for the 2004 model year. This new 6th Generation Malibu based on the GM Epsilon platform was given the name Malibu, whereas the older N-Body 5th Generation Malibu was renamed to the Malibu Classic. The Classic was only available with the 2.2L 4 cylinder Ecotec engine (L61) for 2004 through the end of its production run, and furthermore, was only available as a rental car or to taxi-cab companies. The last year the 5th Generation Malibu was manufactured was 2006 when GM discontinued the body style
they also did a silverado classic in 07.. Probably just had alot of extra parts laying around.. ,lol

They kept the older malibus going in 2005? while putting out the new malibu, hence the classic. And just like Jeremy said, same with silverados... Go chevy for epic smartness

DID THE SAME THING A FEW YEARS AGO WITH THE FORD F-150.. THEY CALLED IT THE HERITAGE SERIES.
"The new F-150 was Motor Trend magazine's Truck of the Year for 1997.[10] The grille was updated in 1999 with minor interior updates as well. The SuperCrew was added to the lineup in 2001. Ford manufactured a limited run of "Heritage Edition" F-150s of this body style in 2004 (as 2004 model years) to finish out production. This truck, with an updated grille, is still available in Mexico as a less-expensive alternative to the current trucks."

This makes sense,

But to keep the whole model going for 2 years as a separate vehicle Vs. just finishing out the production run.

they likely did it to produce a new model to keep their cars fresh, while still fulfilling contractual agreements with a parts or labor union.... remember, unions are what destroyed the american automobile... GM was just in it deeper than ford
