Towed all day with it; happily plugged along doing 75-80 with a loaded car hauler without any sway/issues/lugging.

unsurprisingly like 12mpg, but that’s expected.

glass smooth, and my daughter obviously enjoyed watching Paw Patrol the whole trip.

12's not bad. That's not far off what I get in a toon'd/deleted 6.7 towing a loaded enclosed at 75-80

So 3 month update;
I’ve been working it, pretty hard at that, and it hasn’t missed a beat.

Full up with floor tile;

tomorrow it’s going on for Oil change, coolant flush and trans flush (it has 100k miles on it, figure it’s the right thing to do to ensure it lasts).

Still buttery smooth, stops with authority, and gets out of its own way If I really ask it to (it’s slow, make no mistake, but faster than my GMT800 suburban which isn’t saying much).

I’ve ordered a CarPlay setup for it since SYNC1 is hot garbage which is my only real grievance with the truck honestly, otherwise frankly I can’t be happier with this for daily duty.

one thing of note; I don’t know why these have a bad wrap for Sway? I’ve towed a Car hauler, a Heavy equipment trailer with a front loader, a single axle motorcycle trailer, and my camper all on the highway at speed and it’s been dead stable. I did the math and currently I’ve driven this truck more miles since buying it with a trailer on it than without (about 2,000 miles towing). Maybe it’s people with the short wheel base ones???

How does 1500lbs in a vehicle reduce the towing capacity by the same amount?

GCWR = gross combined weight rating.

the 4x4 expedition EL appears to weigh around 6300lbs curb weight... because 15000 gcwr - 8700 trailer weight capacity= 6300 lbs, also, a solid guesstimate?

every pound of vehicle payload, adds to GCWR... every pound here reduces available towing capacity.

sooooo like my new truck...

GVWR is 7300 lbs.
GCWR is 17800lbs
max payload is 1694 = 7300 lbs gvwr - 5606 lbs curb weight = 1694 lbs payload.

max trailer weight is gcwr - truck weight with payload soo... 17800 - 5606 curb weight = 12,194lbs of towing capacity- but this doesn't account for anything in the truck- passengers, cargo, etc.

so 17800 gcwr - (5606lbs of truck + 1500lbs of tongue weight, passengers and cargo) = 10,694lbs of towing capacity remain because GCWR is the star of the show here.

Ah. I tend to focus on the payload as it typically is what runs out in my experience.

His payload is ~1,500lbs. If I recall his trailer is something like 5000?. So at 10% tongue weight, his payload is reduced by 500lbs allowing for only 1000lbs of capacity in the Expedition for people/dogs/cargo.

Conversely, if he had 1,250lbs of people/cargo/dogs in the Expy, he can only tow ~2200lbs at 10% tongue weight.

So I do have my first actual 'Negative' update right now just to be full disclosure;

I had the oil changed on Tuesday and intended to have them flush the trans too given the mileage and how we use the truck at the dealer most local to me.

They did the "Works" Service, but declined on doing the trans flush as the hose fitting is corroded so badly below the transmission cooler (It's visually split from aluminum corrosion but not leaking).

I called Rod Baker and it sounds like they are working to make this right, so I'll update later if they are willing to eat that as a "miss" from their multi-point inspection that they swore up and down would ensure it was a quality truck, blah blah blah.

I fully intended to pay for the trans flush on my own dime, but I was quoted $850 for just the trans line on a truck that is technically like 6 months outside of its corrosion warranty, so fingers crossed Rod Baker takes care of me.

Separate from that, the power side step on the drive side hasn't been super consistently closing after getting in the truck, so I've just disabled them for now (Menu Setting).

Again, both seem to be fairly common issues for this truck and its age.

One interesting discovery; the 2014 (Last year of that body style and engine) has the SUSPENSION setup of the 2015-2019 Trucks, so aftermarket lift shock options are a little more limited (I want to do a 2/2 lift maybe after winter with some larger rubber/wheels, might just do it with spacers like most recommend)

Another mild update;

Installed CarPlay a month ago which has been a godsend since that was the trucks only real short coming compared to a newer one. I have a fitted dash mount for the phone too which made it ideal for our most recent camping trip down to Chattanooga TN at the end of August. Got a whopping like 8 mpg over the course of the trip (70-75mph highway), cleaning my intake filter off, and already did a fresh oil change so it's ready to head to Mount Rushmore tomorrow.

Currently setting up a hard-wired backup camera for my trailer since the wireless one has kinda been terrible in such a way that I can use my headunit to display that camera instead of adding another screen for the trailer camera.

Have a good trip out west. Did that four years ago. Ran from here to the badlands then all around the Rapid City/Deadwood/Lead area, up through Spearfish Canyon, on to Devil’s Tower, then south to Custer (hotel), all in one shot. That was day 1, lol. Think I was up for 32-34 hours at that point.

Updates:

Lost a cam follower at Rushmore;

No immediate part availability at the time, fucking sent it 1,200 miles and concluded my trip.

Replaced the entire passenger side cam, all followers and lifters for $540, flushed the engine twice.

Gotta give the boat anchor 5.4 credit, despite having a fairly major over the road failure it pulled my camper home, and had a Sub $1,000 repair bill, Has been solid since.

Upgraded the CarPlay system further as well, wireless CarPlay for the massive win.

Oct. 2022 update; Still doing truck things, still has some minor work it needs, cannot bring myself to sell it since I couldn't replace it if I wanted to for twice what I'd sell it for...

Finally got a good pic with the Ranch Hand and new steps:
