Pretty sure AR's have been banned in cook county (city) for a long time.

Cook County Residents are still able to purchase, from most dealers, as there is no way to confirm you are keeping it within county limits. A buyer may potentially be purchasing to keep at his/her cabin in WI where it is legal.

The way I read it, Cook county as a whole, is or has banned all of these weapons.

So, am I illegally owning guns by living in Wheeling, which is Cook county?

Or, is this only within the city limit for the city of Chicago?

If you own & store your AR/AK or any 30+ round magazine within Cook Co. limits, then yes, you are in violation.

Maybe I'm missing something or just blind but the only thing I see gun related is the quarterly reporting of gun violence.

Ryan02Stang - What do you think man?

I didn't know about this and want an AR.

Looks like legally, I cannot own one because I live in Crook County.

Such bullshit.

Funny. Cabelas in Hoffman Estates can sell AR’s.

IIRC they were given some type of exemption though.

You'll have to look very closely at the laws but you might be able to do an AR Pistol with 10 round mags.

They can sell them to you because as someone else said they dont know where your keeping it. Long story short I bought my first handgun SW.40 when I still lived in Chgo. Back then it was still against the law to own a hand gun in Chgo. Guy at Gat Guns knew I lived in Chgo and said its not against the law for him to sell it to me, but its against for me to own while living in Chgo. Once he sells it to me its out of his hands.

But they are selling in cook county. Which I thought was also banned.

Yeah...I knew about this. From what I've heard it is pretty much non-enforced unless you commit a crime with the AR. My neighbor got arrested when the Cubs won the WS for shooting his AR in his front yard and I don't even think they charged him with anything related to actually owning the AR. I'll see if I can find the article.

Such stupidity!

Was only charged with reckless discharge of a firearm...

https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/mount-prospect-man-charged-with-firing-ar-15-into-ground/

A northwest suburban Mount Prospect is facing charges after he allegedly fired his AR-15 into the ground near his home Thursday.

Zachary Reed, 19, was charged with two counts of reckless discharge of a firearm, according to a statement from Mount Prospect police. He lives in the 400 block of South See Gwun Avenue.

Officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 400 block of South See Gwun Avenue, police said. They later learned that Reed had fired his rifle “into the ground near the driveway of his residence in the presence of others.”

His bond was set at $40,000 Thursday, police said. His next court date is Nov. 28.

Based on your experience, is it just city limits or cook county wide.

I know BeerOrGasoline said cook county wide, but, I just want to be 1000% sure.

I plan on getting rid of my new mossberg for an AR build sometime this year or next.

If it is illegal and kind of one of this gray areas, I may not take the chance. It could progress to be heavily enforced and I see it as a problem for me if I go that route.

Definitely county wide

Someone would need a warrant to come look in your safe. I think if it escalates to that point...there will be riots.

So, looking at this some more.

Pistols are banned too if they have a magazine with more than 10 rounds?

So, my M&P, Glock 21 are both illegal?

Da Fuq?
Sure are. Again though, I don't think it's enforced.

But this is why I have a 1911 for home defense. If I have to ever shoot anyone, it is legal in Cook County since it only has an 8 round magazine.

At quick glance it’s illegal if it has a fixed magazine that holds more than 10, but for detachable magazine it needs one of those sub sections also which none of yours should have unless you put a threaded barrel and muzzle device on.
