🔧 BUILD CMNT's thing is bigger than yours v. cubic inch displacement

General Information

So... I am finally doing a thing. It's a thing I've been talking about for awhile now. I had held off as working for Sears as I didn't want to spend money on a happy meal, much less any big purchases... Now that I am happilly employed elsewhere I figured it was now time to shit or get off the pot. Anyway, I have been looking for awhile and am currently in the process of buying it.

Ok, so what is it?

3/4 ton, 2003 Suburban LT 4x4, with the ole 496'er and 4.10 gears. It has the normal assortment of dings, a door dent, and normal wear and tear of a 17 y/o GM truck, but what sold it was that all this has less than 100k on the clock and the price was cheap. So I wasted no time getting the dealer on the phone and putting a deposit on it before anyone else could. The problem is... The dealer is out in Utah.

I do have some dealer pics I will post when I get on my other computer, But I am so excited to have another Vortec 8100.

The Eagle has landed (about freaking time).

They put the new mirrors on. Bonus though, is that they put on the big mirrors. :D Fog light lenses are busted (but the light works), so I will just use that as an excuse to get some nice LED ones.

Already have the Chevy bowtie center caps on order, a Volant intake is on the way.

Debating on that. The one thing I don't like (I didn't like them on my HD) was that the mount is flimsy and they "bounce" a little. So what route I chose is yet to be determined.

Also need new vent visors and the guy left a couple CD's in there. If anyone wants Nirvana Nevermind, Meatloaf, Celine Dion... :D

Was looking at tires the other night, so General Grabber A/TX's will probably go on.

Things were done today...

1) Scrapped the crappy, flimsy K&N FPIK (or whatever it is) for the Volant (which was on my door step this morning even though they said it wouldn't be here until October 1st). I also cleaned the shit out of the MAF and the TB... The TB was terrible. Anyway, not sure if the Volant is that much better, or it's a combination with the cleaning, the truck absolutely ripped while taking it out for a test drive.

2) Swapped out the OEM tail lights for these LED Tails. They look much better at night. I think it was just too bright out to see them well;

3) Then I leveled it out. I also fixed all the vent visors. The two rear door ones were completely broken. The front two, I was just able to restick with some new 3M Moulding tape.

Those big ass mirrors are the reason I totaled my 2009 2500 Burb :(

Curiosityiskillingthis cat...

I will say I am still getting used to the bright ass led turn signals in them.

I'm jelly of this one. Great find!
How crusty is it underneath?

The normal surface rust for a 17 y/o truck.

It came with the skid plate package and there is some greasiness on the main skid plate, so I need to investigate and solve. Could just be old stuff as there are no signs of current leaks.

In the next week or two, I am going to do a cooling system flush and new hoses (dealership did the belts), as the coolant is overfilled and nasty looking.

Went for an alignment and they told me it needed new ball joints before they could align it.

So I did that yesterday and went and got it aligned.

Then I put those new fog lights in, and unfortunately like my old 2500HD, they wobble on bumps. I think I know what I'm gonna do to fix that issue.

I only have a few steering wheel ones out.

I am going to change out the cluster lights though. While none of them are out, I want them brighter. In these clusters, GM uses a cube light that is soldered to the board. There are 12 of them, which includes both turn indicators and the high beam indicator.

These are what I got from a place called GM Gauge Repair (they also have replacements or Fix kits for the other buttons in the steering wheel and on the dash);

This is our cluster (the circled ones with the blue caps on them);

Yup. I think their kit for the digital HVAC headunit turns out nice. I may do that in the future.

I can't remember if it is this place, or somewhere else I found all new buttons and knobs for the radio, if you have ones that get wore off

So kinda got back on track for getting the truck side set up for the plow. Went intertubez searching for the mount, A Western 67981-2. Find a few used, but in shit shape or missing the hardware (not that I can't address either on my own), but the used prices weren't really cheaper than new and the best new price was $465. OK, cool. So I go to a few of these plow part places, put them in my cart. They want $75, $80, $100 to ship it...

So I call up R.A. Adams (my kinda go to place), he has them in stock $430.52 + tax.

Should've just gone that route first. I thought searching online would get me cheaper. :D

So I put the LED's in tonight. I can't say I am happy. They weren't really any brighter than the regular bulbs, and despite being "white" they really result in a more blue color, which I think is attributable to the blue backing on the gauge overlay;

This pic came out much brigher, the needles much more radiant orange and overall not as blue as they are to the eye. I can't figure out how to reduce the exposure on this phone. So I may be looking for brighter cubes, or other overlay options without the blue tint on the backside.
