I think you, as the customer, can still redeem it though. The company basically eats it at that point.

But given our financial condition, I could see something along the lines of 10 year old gift card (just using that as an example), has a very low probability of being redeemed, so take the income.

Ha, nope, my wife is the one that works at Motorola. But I bet a lot of companies do stuff like that. I think it's shady. They should just send the customer a statement each month, or make them aware of the credit.
When I was at Moto a dude ended up fired because he took a bunch of random credits on customer accounts, and applied them to random debit balances he had on other customer accounts. LOL!
