Does anybody know anything about the TR-3160? It looks like another potential option, used in the ATS from '13 on, also under $1,000 for a unit with under 60k on it. Looks like you can get a yoke adapter that bolts on to the output flange to be able to use a slip style driveshaft. Though the starter provision is on the wrong side of the bellhousing. The ratios look a little better than the AY-6.

So working out some of the costs, just to get a ballpark, has anybody had to get a custom (not a special racing super strong version) slip-style driveshaft? I would ballpark that around $400-$500, based on what you can get one custom made for a truck at one of the online places. Unless there's a good reason not to use an adapter on the block, I'd probably have to pay a machine shop to get the dimensions of the bellhousing bolt pattern relative to the input shaft centerline (unless that info is online already), then waterjet an adapter plate and get a custom clutch. I can get the adapter waterjet for around $60, depending on how many holes there are. I figure that a custom clutch is going to be around $400 (that's what it was for the Bonneville anyway), and I'd spend around $100 adapting my clutch line unless by chance the quick disconnect is the same.

So $1000 for all that, might have to get creative with the TIG to get the shifter, starter provision, and tail mount worked out. Plus the cost of the transmission.

Matt what are the plans for the car?

Your end goal will help determine if you’re heading down the right path in terms of mods or ultimately wasting money. If you are dead set on building this platform continue on, but I think others are trying to say you’ll be WAY better off in the long run with an already LSJUAN equipped car.

My warehouse guy just bought a 99 6 speed formula that has a bran new clutch and brakes and new hooker cat-back for $3,800. Thing drives great. There is zero reason to fuck around with a 3800 car.

Exactly my point as well as what Outlaw has stated. I just get a rise out of certain people

Why do people get so bent when someone puts money into something non-LS powered haha.

I don’t think anybody is getting bent putting money into something other than an LS powered car. It is sound advice to not waste/time money on a 3800 if you are trying to make decent power on a budget vs heading down a road which will ultimately limit what you can do. But if you love 3800’s and that is what is important to you there is nothing wrong with that.

I think knowing the context of the build up front might have helped with that.

'Budget' and 'LS' don't exactly go together in the same sentence though.

If I wanted to make decent power I'd plop a HY35 or something on an L67. And that still costs less than rebuilding a LS motor. But that's not what I'm after anyway.

As far as context, it's in a 3800 subsection of the forum to begin with, and somebody else instantly jumped on the LS1/T56 car bandwagon.

umm. I have 2 friends who bought a $400 5.3 from our LKQ junk yard and got a $500 used intake and then had a custom cam done and valvesprings ordered for another $700. Then fabbed their own turbo system with ebay intercooler and a used turbo which totalled under $1,500 and some sort of used injectors and like 2 wallburrow 255 pumps they got for $100 ect. and the car went fucking mid 9's at byron. seriously there was like $4,000 in this build starting with a bolt on 99 z28 on drag radials that the motor was blown to begin with. if you want to go super budget you can. if you want 1,500hp well then your in a whole nother level and better have deep pockets.
