Hi guys, long time...

If you don't know, I've moved to Phoenix... been here for 2 years now... good stuff... had to get out of Chicago weather... the Polar Vortex was enough for me...

Anyway, on saturday (4/23/2016) I bought my first hand gun:

it's a Smith & Wesson SDVE 9mm semi-auto. Came with 2 16RD mags. I bought a cheap-ish holster just to wear right away when I go to the Basic Training class next month. I also already bought a biometric safe, and the gun is in there now. Making sure I'm doing all of this the right way.

I have been eating up YouTube vids on this model as well as other basic stuff. But I figure I'd come to you guys with some other questions.

How many magazines would you recommend?
What kind (brand) of ammo do you like?
How often do you go to the range?

I'm also interested in buying the Smith & Wesson M&P-15 Sport II rifle, as well as at least 1 more hand gun and a shotgun of some sort.

Any recommendations would be helpful... and can we please keep the politics out of it? I'm not anti-gun and that's as far as it needs to go... :biggthump

Thanks!

Magazines depend on how your going to use it, plinking self defense 2-3 is plenty, competition you will want at least 5 mags, for plinking and range use I mostly shoot reman ammo from a trusted company, self defense hornady critical defense, I really try to go to the range every week but I've been slacking bad lately

@Mr_Robato just bought an SD9-VE and has done some research and shooting with them. From what I can tell, they're good guns, especially for the $$$. Like anything else, I'm going to recommend you run factory mags. For the 20% more money, you're damn near guaranteed a good running gun.

Also, FWIW, I have an M&P-15 Sport II and love it. I just got it a month ago or so, only have 300ish rds through it, but, it's damn good right out of the box with the (crappy) iron sights. I'm going to be deciding on optic and accessories in the near future.

I believe it's MecGar that makes a majority of OEM mags and you can sometimes find them cheaper than the OEM ones

What are some good reman companies?

Not a bad starter gun at all. I've personally never shot one, but I was told the triggers are a bit heavy.

Yeah, here's what you need to know:

Not a lot of mag options out there. Sorry. They are not cheap and you're getting 16 rounders or 10s. Supposedly Sigma mags will fit if you find em used at a good price. If you get to 30ish I'd pick em up.

I haven't taken it to the range yet but I did put the Apex Spring kit in. I don't know if you're mechanical but I'd give it real consideration. Even if you only do the striker spring and skip the trigger return spring replacement it will drop the pull considerably. Test with your ammo if you're going to use it for SD obviously. I'm expecting some accuracy gains and it to be a lot easier to shoot.

Too bad they're in Oswego and don't ship.

That's when you tell guys who live there to pick up and bring it to a meet.

I didn't even know there was a place in my back yard.

Marengo Guns sells their ammo, it's $1 more per 100rds at Marengo VS buying it there. I'm completely OK with that considering I'm at Marengo at least once a month. Do I go there just for ammo? Hell no, but, every time I'm there I pick up $100 worth of assorted ammo (whatever I'm running low on) and just keep a rolling inventory.

Interesting thing here in AZ is there are virtually no restrictions, whatsoever. You don't even need a permit to conceal carry, and you can open carry obvs too... though I've only seen 2 people open carry the 2 years I've been here.

Concealed carry permits are issued if you want one, helps with traveling out of state and there are places here that restrict carrying (serving alcohol), but with a CCW you can ignore that... which kind of sucks... though they say you can't drink when you're carrying. Not sure how much I'd trust that one though.

So I can drive around with the gun loaded and holstered in the car. No problem.

And if I wanted another gun, like right now, I could have it back home within 2 hours. That's how long it took me to get the last one, background check and all. And if you do get a CCW, then you're not required to do a background check anymore.

I don't plan on open or concealed carrying... especially since open carry is viewed a bit differently for people that look like me, unfortunately.

Thanks for the info everyone. I'm really excited to go to the range for the first time and to take the basic course. As I've said before, I was never anti-gun, just never saw the need for one. I still don't, tbh, there are no zombies just yet ... But I've come to realize it's a want... which is just as valid too...

There's many things in life we hope we don't need but want to have on hand. Things like fire extinguishers, a spare, home pregnancy tests but if you need em you need em.

Just picked up another 1,000 round case for $186. Unfortunately it was 115 grain 9mm instead of the usual 124 I usually get, but it'll do just fine....

I got it at ammunitionstore.com, if you get the Blazer Brass(5200), enter SAVE10 and I'll knock it down to that price

I saw that email earlier. If I wasn't broke I'd have picked some up
