BUILD Boostie’s 1987 Notchback

General Information

I will hop on board in the build section here as I have been a member of TCG and big follower of sloppy on FB over the years.

Quick run down of my turd that I built completely out of my garage.

Basic SS2 don’t bs me style build for the engine on E85
Shiny Borg turbo
Th400 with PTC converter
Holley Terminator setup with 7” dash
Bunch of Low Dollar sensors and SEP injectors
On board air setup for boost control/airing tires
Lots of fancy un-needed suspension

Just got the car running recently but looking forward to this coming year. So far I’ve been doing the tuning on my own but may throw it on the dyno eventually

Whose seat back support bracket is that? Way simpler than the one I fabbed up for my car.

Was something that PJ and I came up with. The clamps are pre made from McMaster Welded and some chromoly tubing and attached to some steel plates I welded up for the seat. I wanted to be able to adjust the braces in the event that I changed seat placement. since the racecraft rails have adjustability. Was cheaper and more simple than anything that I could find.

I believe these were used

Few more pix since Jeffs FRC Jeffs FRC loves them.

Picked up a glasstek flat hood. It’s a pin on and the lightest hood I’ve owned by far

Had the front end aligned and bump steer set

Got the interior mostly together. Added a remote USB port on the center console for cataloging though the Holley

And a couple scenic pix for the fanz

Swapped the rear tires for some fresh Mickey’s and hoping to find time to bring it to the track. Been cruising the shit out of the car and it’s a blast on the street. Hoping next year both race the car and also do some sort of power tour type event

Nice build! I have a similar seat brace, I think Autopower was who I got it from.

I'm going down the same path, focus on making it very drivable and then make passes when I feel the car is 100% good on the street. I need to swap my WG springs, I only make 3 lbs on spring lol.

I plan to make some passes now that some cooler air is in the forecast but driving it and working on the tune has been a great learning experience. I was on 3# springs for a while but have 6.5 in it now for the street. I have an on board air setup on the car and am beginning to learn how to control boost via the Holley.

Yeah a buddy tuned mine and fixed a bunch of stuff, he made 14 psi with the car with the line pulled off. I have bottle/c02 now but onboard air is interesting. How loud is it?

The pump is pretty quiet, I have it mounted in the trunk and have rubber isolators under it. I originally did it for the versatility and having a quick connect to air up my tires but im slowly learning I dont use it for that. If I come across a cheap C02 tank with regulator I might make the switch to simplify things.

Car looks great Boostie, but that hood looks like its made out of cardboard and fit up by my 3 year old. I understand it's light and racecar shit, but MAN! lol

Now bring that bitch out to the track and turn some numbers!!!

I think its actually made out of paper mache! I still have the other cowl hood but hate how big it is. I have a couple track days planned coming up, recently bought a new helmet and fire jacket/pants so I am good to go

So the tank just cycles when you first run the car and that's it?

Any idea on race weight?

Yeah it fills up to a certain pressure similar to a larger compressor and refills when it falls below a certain threshold. I have a regulator on the outlet similar to a c02 tank but obviously the air tank is at a much lower pressure.

I have not gotten the car on the scales yet but I would imagine its quite light. The cage is mild steel but the car is pretty much a tin box. I am hoping for sub 3k weight with it.

Yeah a buddy with a notch was 29xx ish with driver with an alum block and chrome moly 10 pt, I'm guessing you are around there. I figure my '67 Camaro is 3200 with me and the iron LM7. I have an LC9 to build for next year, that would drop 110 lbs. I have a build thread in Members Rides if you want to check it out.

I'm hoping maybe to hit the track very late October or just next year, so many little aspects of the car to make sure they are right. What intake manifold what what RPM would you shift at?

I have a Holley Race manifold on the car. The current engine is SBE so I will be juggling trying to shift above peak torque but keep the RPMS low enough to keep the engine together. I have a friend with a dyno so I plan to put it on the rollers at some point to better understand the power/torque curves. If I can be around 3klbs with me in it I would be pretty happy.

I know what you are saying about trying to make sure everything is right. I have put over 200 miles on the car this summer and just barely starting to feel confident in putting some passes down. Ill have to take a peek at your updated post, I had been following it for a while but its been a minute since I have checked it out! I think we have pretty similar setups

Yeah I'm SBE and my tooner told me to shift at 7600 or higher with my combo. I'm guessing you are easily 3000 or just under.

I drove mine 90 minutes 2 weeks ago after fixing some stuff, I was nervous but it all worked out. I plan to put another 2-3 hours on it over this weekend if the weather is okay. I'm on the North side.

Been a little while since I have updated, learned a lot this year assembling the whole car in my garage and doing all the tuning by myself.

The Holley system has been nothing short of fun learning and configuring different tasks specific to the car. Finally got a couple track days under my belt and the car is way faster than I expected to be, even on low boost. With all factory body panels, engine bay and glass & 15 gallons of fuel the car was right at 3,000 lbs with my fatass in it.

Racing locally has changed quite a bit since I started this journey and I have changed some of my goals with the car for the future. I plan to do both prepped and unprepped events next year and trying to lock down what class I want to target. Unfortunately for me, most of the 1/4 mile stuff I was interested in has dried up and my car on the 28 is outgunned for 1/8th so I will most likely be making some adjustments to accommodate what looks interesting.

Drag week style events have been blowing up though and have become more and more appealing to me so I want to make sure the car would be good enough for a long trip. This may require some modifications to my cooling system but the experience seems pretty awesome. In the end of the day I want a car I can drive almost anywhere and still crack off some quick passes at the track and I feel like I'm slowly getting there.

Anyway, there are lots of plans for the future and here are some pix from this year. Mook Mook could you move this to the members ride section as I feel a majority of the "build" is complete
