BUILD Boostie’s 1987 Notchback

General Information

I will hop on board in the build section here as I have been a member of TCG and big follower of sloppy on FB over the years.

Quick run down of my turd that I built completely out of my garage.

Basic SS2 don’t bs me style build for the engine on E85
Shiny Borg turbo
Th400 with PTC converter
Holley Terminator setup with 7” dash
Bunch of Low Dollar sensors and SEP injectors
On board air setup for boost control/airing tires
Lots of fancy un-needed suspension

Just got the car running recently but looking forward to this coming year. So far I’ve been doing the tuning on my own but may throw it on the dyno eventually

You guys using the stuff in the green bottle? https://amzn.to/3Ni9Lr7
yup, Walmart usually has so I buy a few bottles a year...I eye ball it and just dump 1oz in my 5 gallon jugs that I usually fill to 6 gallons. I'm weird and test my E every time at gas station and just fill my jugs then fill the car at home. Didn't even look at my filter this year but last year checked filter after 1500 miles and had injectors cleaned and both were spotless. Haven't had 93 in the car in 4yrs, and it sits all winter.

01bluesnake 01bluesnake said he had issues with the Lucas Ethanol stuff. Sounds like the same gelling issue you had.

Yeah, i was running the Lucas stuff, but it is not E85 friendly. I was adding per the directions, and when i pulled out my pump after 1500 miles, the whole tank, and pump were coated in a sticky honey like film. I switched over to VP M2 additive which is made for the E85/meth type fuels.

Were you using the stuff I linked? It says its specific for ethanol and E85, I am assuming it might be another product?

did the car run hotter with it?

I ended up pulling the diaper off on the drive portion for day 3&4 but that was with no data and purely just a preventative to help with heat soak. I plan to add a oil temp sensor soon. Coolant temps were unaffected of the blanket and I’ve street driven with it on for the last 2 years. P PJx5x has me wanting to add an oil cooler. Once I get an oil temp setup going I’ll def consider it with some data.

Quick update, I got my fuel pump back from magnafuel, they said it was pretty toast. According to them they recommend a rebuild every couple years.

While that was out, I made a new fuel feed line. Now it’s 10an from 8an previously.

Ordered a larger amp alternator, which was DOA. I am waiting on a replacement now.

To continue my shit steak with parts. I had a scare when I started the car after getting the fuel pump back on and new fuel line. Ended up being a failed Low Dollar pressure sensor I had monitoring oil. Luckily I had a spare and it was just that and not engine issues. Drained the oil and it was fine just to be sure

I have a set of Bosch 210 lb injectors on order and once I confirm everything is good to go I will figure out a second fuel pump to run for street driving. Right now I am leaning on running a AEM 400lph pump and then have the 4303 turn on under boost.

Last but not least, I’m back with my projector retrofit. After letting the light sit on for 2 hours with the led bulbs, temps were much lower than with the HID’s and the lens was fine. I plan to swap the pass side lens that got damaged and finish these up.

Thanks for info you running a Motion or Summit diaper?

I've been driving around with 2 pumps, the Bosch 044 is what I drive around on and the Weldon comes up with boosties.

Mine is an older Motion blanket.

Interesting about the Low Doller stuff. I had a bunch of their sensors ready to go on the car, but Sound talked me out of them, saying they had nothing but failures with pretty much every single one they tried. Switched over to all Holley sensors.

I've heard mostly good things about Lowdoller, I run a mix of their sensors and Holley. My friends who have been racing for a few years tell me that I should pick up spares for all sensors they can be consumables.

Brandon has been great with customer service, but I will say at this point I have had 2 fail. The first was a fuel pressure sensor (design issue that was replaced for free) and the second was this oil pressure. (about 3 years old) It does bother me that a failure could lead to a more costly issue but IMO only a few brands are probably marginally better than the rest.

Ever consider remote mounting the sensors?

I try to remote mount as much as I can. Coolant temp and trans temp are the only 2 that are ridged threaded to the part they are measuring. Ideally in the future I would like to use AN hoses and relocate all the sensors to a remote block on the firewall or somewhere that makes replacement easy.

I've had pretty good luck with cheap $20 pressure transducers. I'm not sure what the difference is between the cheap Amazon transducers and low doller transducers. The Holley sensors are made by SSI. Maybe you can find them somewhere else without the Holley markup.

I have a $15 transducer on my on board air since its not super critical and it has been flawless.

Got the car up and running on the 210’s with the -10 feed. Fuel pressure seems way better wit new filters and the magnafuel pump rebuilt. Started to get back at the youboob stuff, almost up to 300 subs which is neat

Also got the rest of my fuel system parts. Going to run the AEM 400lph pump under vacuum and have the Holley kick the 4303 on under boost. Also thanks to P PJx5x I have a 3 bar map sensor to install so we can really swing for the moon

Found me a Masterpower T70 turbo behind a dumpster today.

Winter plans are to swap this turbo in, get rid of some of the silicone couplers, tube the front end, shed more weight so Jeffs FRC Jeffs FRC can be right calling my car a tin can, adding more sensors for data and coming out in 2024 for another season of being too slow for heads up small tire racing
