So I am going to ask a dumb question here. Are there people who just live on their houseboats or do they have to pull them out in winter and live some where else? We've all seen lake Michigan frozen.

They get pulled out or they drive them south for the most part. There are places around here boats stay in the water all year though. They have equipment to keep the water from freezing around the boats but it would NOT be fun to stay on one in the winter. Barely insulated and imagine the difference in heat loss with your outside walls touching water vs air.
