Yesterday, a report surfaced suggesting BMW had given the M3 Touring – a wagon version of the hot M3 sedan – the go-ahead for production. It’d be the first M3 wagon, but the report noted that we wouldn’t see the model arrive until after 2023. BMW M has proven that rumor false by teasing the M3 Touring on Instagram today, which means we could see it much sooner.

BMW M posted a lone photo of the M3 Touring’s derrière with much of the car draped in dramatic shadows. We can see the illuminated taillights that are borrowed from the regular 3 Series. Those sit above a fairly subtle rear bumper with a blackened rear diffuser housing the quad exhaust outlets. Shadows hide any design details further forward on the car, though we don’t expect it will stray far from the design of the M3 and regular 3 Series.

Rumors suggest BMW will offer the next-gen M3 with different outputs. There’ll be a less-powerful Pure model that sends 460 horsepower (343 kilowatts) to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual. The regular M3 will make 480 hp (357 kW) while the M3 Competition could produce as much as 510 hp (380 kW), though those will comes standard with xDrive all-wheel-drive and BMW’s eight-speed automatic gearbox. We can only hope BMW offers an M3 Touring Pure model to satisfy purists, or BMW could do something different.

With BMW teasing the M3 Touring ahead of when it plans to unveil the M3 and M4 in September, we bet there’s a good chance it’ll show up there. We hope we wouldn’t have to wait until 2024. Outside of prototypes and one-offs, this is the closest BMW has gotten to a production M3 wagon. We don’t know the price, what powertrains it’ll come with, or where it’ll go on sale, but we shouldn’t have to wait long for those answers.

I know there will be the usual TCG people that cry "wagons are dumb!" "americans hate wagons!" "if you love a wagon so much, why dont you own one?"

To those people I say
