Splitting this out to it's own thread:

Backstory: in high school (mid 90s) my best friend at the time got a job at Best Buy, ended up working in their AV area and in the late 90s had a very nice home theater set up in his basement. He later went to work for Abt in their home theater department and I think even later started his own custom home theater company in the north suburbs. I lost contact with him (as happens) and haven't spoke to him in 20+ years. Needless to say, he was in intoduction to home theaters and proper sound. I always had a cheap receiver of some sort, even in my bedroom with external speakers. I have never used the TV speakers for audio since the mid 90s. I'd consider myself an "audiophile", but much in the way that I'm a car enthusiest, I'm not looking for an 8 second street car nor am I looking for a 6 figure home theater.

When we were looking to move in early 2020 (signed papers with our realtor in mid Feb 2020) **I** had a major want on my list, a basement home theater. It didn't have to be completed, but in the back of my mind it was important.

It just to happened that the house we ended up with had (in addition to all the other items on our checklist) by all accounts, previously had a home theater in the basement (speaker wires in the walls, holes in the walls were the screen had been, etc).

After we closed here (late May 2020) there were clearly other priorities, so the basement home theater had to wait.

At the previous house, I had the following set up in our small living room:

I already had a Dolby 3.0 setup at the old house with Klipsch towers and a Klipsch center channel and a decent Pioneer 7.1 Receiver that I got in 2018 to replace hand me down, mismatched 5.1 speakers and a cheap Denon receiver.

We also had a Sony 8500 series 4k TV that we bought in 2016.

Those all got moved to the basement and we replaced that in our current bigger living room with a X800 series 85" TV and a soundbar.

Feb 2020, I had a friend who works at Costco, so she hooked me up with their black Friday deal of a 12" powered Klipsch sub. Last summer, I picked up Klipsch 5 1/4 bookshelf speakers as rears and had a true 5.1 set up in the basement finally.

Seating was left over misc non matching chairs. Last last summer we ordered some proper theater seating that got delivered in Nov. Thus started the true home theater build.

Last week, we ordered an Epson 4k Projector and 120" screen for the basement. We had a Best Buy Magnolia theater specialist come by and inspect the room. We spent about 2.5-3 hours going through the room and various options.

So, alot of what the Magnolia guy and I discussed in the 2.5 hrs is how far down the "enthusiast/audiophile" wormhole. I don't have multiple 5 figures to throw at this odd shaped room to make it a true home theater. I don't even have low 5 figures for this (though all in with the price of existing furniture and the stuff we have it would be)

There have to be compromises somewhere. Like I said, the shape of this room is odd, it's not ideal for a true theater, and I knew that going in. I'm not trying to replicate my local AMC in my basement, I just want something at home that's decent for a decent price point. What we ended up coming up with, I think, will be a really decent movie watching room for the family.

Here's the work I have to do before they install the projector/screen on the 23rd

Some of the items are being delivered straight to me, including a Panamax MR5100 Power Line Conditioner, which we may have overpaid through BB, but I'm going to see if I can get a pricematch once it's here (should be here by the end of the week) if it's still on sale on Amazon (about a $200 difference). Once that's here, I need to move the components we're keeping (Xbox One, Apple TV, Roku, Switch, Receiver, Panamax) over to where they'll be mounted, off to the side (right) of the seating.

I need to buy the stuff to make some shelves, looking at some industrial pipe shelves for them and put it in it's final spot. Then I've got to run the wiring from there to where the speakers are at currently. I bought 2 spools of speaker wire, 100 feet and a 50 foot of RCA for the subwoofer.

Then I've got to build a mounting box attached to the beams in the drop ceiling for the Projector to mount to. He said to have it as close to the drop ceiling tile as possible. He also suggested mounting the ceiling speakers to a piece of wood and attach that to the beams as well instead of having them hang on the drop ceiling. I'm not positive if those speakers will be delivered directly to me beforehand of brought on site the day of the install. I'm going to the pull the existing rears down and not mount them until everything is finalized, incase the towers end up moving. We got the Best Buy Total Tech subscription, which was $200 but saved us $450 in install and includes tuning of the receiver, so I'll utilize that.

The exact mounting point will be determined on the exact seating and the spacing of the ceiling tiles above the seats. He suggested 1 speaker directly above each chair, as close to the middle of the chairs as possible.

Oh and I have to remove the 65" and the wall mount and figure out what to do with that.

Then once the room is all done, we're going to start painting and decorating. Area rug on the floor, posters and canvas prints on the walls.

It's alot of work for the next 2 weekends, as I don't want pull everything apart now, as we use the room regularly.

I'm excited to see how it turns out.

Yeah, he was able to get a cable for us on price match, I just didn't look at the specifics of the Panamax, which honestly I had no idea what it was. Is it really needed? eh, probably not. Especially not at close to $600. But with Amazon having one for under $400, it's a no brainer.

Plus the Projector and screen were both on sale, so I'm happy with what we paid.

Shit, the first big TV that we bought was a 1080i (not even a 1080p) rear projector Mitsubishi DLP TV that I want to say we paid 4 or 5k for back in 2003/4 in our 2nd apartment. This projector/screen/powersupply/install/misc items was slightly less that TV for a 4k 120" setup.

So we've been talking about what to watch first once the setup is done.

We, as a family, will be watching the 4k Lord of the Rings Trilogy eventually.

But first movie that we'll be watching is this, we have the 4k UH Disc already. I watched it when we got the disc and from what I remember, the visuals and audio in this movie are awesome. I remember really enjoying it.

original Matrix would be good except the wife hates that movie.

Called BB, since the Panamax on Amazon isn't sold by Amazon, they won't price match, so we'll be ordering one from Amazon for the nearly $250 price difference.

And with that price difference, I'm thinking go ahead and pick up another 12" powered subwoofer (something the Magnolia guy told me he has in his house, 2 subs don't have to work as hard as 1 sub) Amazon has one at $260ish, this one sold by Amazon, so I'll get BB to price match and have it today since I'll have to go return the Panamax at the store anyways.

You want a giant sound improvement, you should really treat the room. That’s going to end up being a giant echo chamber.

I’d do some 2x4 broadband absorbers, a thick floor rug and some bass traps in the corners.

Maybe not as crazy as my room, but I’d do something. The flutter echo is definitely going to degrade your sound with all those hard surfaces. Stay away from the acoustic foam…it’s bullshit.

Rock wool is cheap and effective for broadband absorption. You can use OC 703 fiberglass, but it’s pretty pricey. I made frames out of 1x4 pine, and slipped canvas burlap over them.

Acoustic treatments are definitely next. I want a Star Wars ruggable for the room but I don’t want to spent $700 on a rug, so I may just go with the thickest rug I like.

Ordered the Panamax MR5100 from Amazon and will return the BB one this weekend or next week. And I’ll pick up a 2nd subwoofer at the same time.

I spent about 2.5 hours tonight getting ready for the install.

Fixed the power source for the projector, including attaching the loose conduit to the beams. Removed additional can lights that we won’t be using. Started running wires too, HDMI for projector and a 50 ft RCA cable for the left subwoofer.

Tomorrow I’m getting a crown on my tooth that had a root canal a few weeks ago, so I doubt I’ll do much. But next is the removing the rear speakers and mounts and prepare to put them up front. And then I need to mount the ceiling speakers, need some 1/8” plywood sheets to support the speakers on the drop ceiling panel.

And I have to build a box for the projector to mount.

Progress pics:

HDMI cable for the projector, where the components will sit, surge projector on the power for the projector and all the state of the basement:

I didn’t see that hung ceiling, definitely insulate above that. Probably not as important to use something as dense as rockwool, but it will still act as a bass trap with all that surface area. The more bass trap you add, the cleaner the bass will be. Give you the option of multiple subs down the road

Yup, we definitely also plan on getting a few rolls of insulation and toss it up in the ceiling for sound deadening. I noticed while working on this, just with the few tiles that I took off, the sound echoes from the main floor (living room is directly above this room).

Looks like a nice setup, and lots of room.
A decent newer movie kids and bass friendly was the new ghostbusters afterlife.
For future speakers, I would recommend watching on the AVS classifieds forums. https://www.avsforum.com/forums/audio-gear.209/.
I have bought and sold plenty on there. There are also a lot of guys from the Chicagoland suburbs that have get together to check out gear, talk about systems and all that other fun stuff. I started off with Klipsch, and like the speakers and an Onkyo receiver. I have moved onto JTR speakers for fronts and surrounds. Many folks on AVS like the JTR ($$$) and diy sets like 1099, JBL and others. JTR is owned by a guy who used to have his shop in Kenosha, but since moved to South Carolina. Lots of audiophiles around. I still enjoy my Klipsch as well.
Next step after sound absorption (there is also diy sound panels at AVS as well) I would say subwoofers is the place to be be. I am also addicted to bass and have like 16 subs in my room. Some nearfield for feeling, some under the couch for shaking, and 4 18” subs for all around bass. Subs can be relatively inexpensive. You can get build kits and 18” sub from Partsexpress.com. Or buy them on AVS from someone that built them and is moving onto something different. I have 2 diy subs from parts express (18” ultimax in Marty cube) and 2 18” JTR captivators.
There are 8 12” subs I bought from Best Buy ($30 each) that move the seating. A fun project. Similar to buttkickers (transducer that shakes) if you want more of a bass tactile feel without booming subs. That would be a different fun project.

It’s a pretty low priority, since it works as is, but I’d love to have an awesome entertainment space in my basement like that.

Yeah, I hear you. Go piece by piece, that's how this set up is. Started in 2018 with the receiver, 2 towers and center. All in around 1k. Now that I've got the projector/screen sorted out, in the future I may upgrade my speakers and it's easy to do!

16 subs? HOLY SHIT BATMAN! LOL

I thought going from 1 sub to 2 was on the extreme side (my wife will definitely be like WTF do we need 2 subs for?)

This is going to be a wormhole that I was already 1 arm in that I think I need to just dive into the deep end!

I'll be honest, part of why I went with Klipsch, in addition to being found locally at any Best Buy, is that they look so damn nice without the speaker grill.

I'm a little bummed that their in ceiling speakers aren't copper, so they'll have the grills.

When I did my basement I had my ceiling insulated and makes such a difference from the echo from upstairs. I hated being in the basement and hearing foot steps above or any noise.
