Hi All,

If you had room to get a new setup, which of the two would you get? Already have a weber charcoal, gas grill, blackstone, and a huge custom made party charcoal grill. So, this is just one to use and mess around with. I do like slow cooks, but don't really smoke much.
which would you rather have? I was eyeing the Weber Searwood XL's which are getting way better results and reviews over the old weber pellet ones. I'm not stuck on weber, but i've always had good luck with all of their products.

I'm goin Sear wood cause I already have an Acorn which works great as a lump charcoal smoker / grill

And a 4 Burner Weber Gasser

I've often thought about the simplicity of a pellet smoker, basically setting and forgetting it.

The Acorn, especially at low temperature (225) is a challenge to maintain depending on the weather ( air density, wind etc)

I’m currently eyeing the searwood XL myself. All the reviews seem positive but webers last smoker (the smokefire) was a real hunk of junk according to pretty much every long term review.

I was going to do the pit boss competition 1600 as everybody seems to like it but the app apparently sucks so that makes me wary

Surprised you aren't going with an electric grill.

how's the quality?

i seem to remember initial offerings rusting kind of quickly? not sure if just review hearsay though

My Masterbuilt is going on 5 years old and is fine - but it's cheaper Chinese quality materials. The inside of the firebox was known for rusting away and exposing the firebrick, but nobody seems to have had issues with that after it happens. The new ones come with stainless in the fireboxes now, iirc.

of those two choices, green egg. compare to weber smokey mountain as well. BUT considering what you already have, I'd go offset or gravity charcoal. Pellet smoke is for convenience. The real deal is charcoal and I think would fit in perfectly with your existing fleet.

Now I also have been thinking of making a smoke box and turning the party grill into an offset smoker, since I don't nearly use it much anymore. Feed it on one end, seal off the front a little more and add a exhaust pipe to it. Wouldn't be much work?

Never had a big green egg type grill to run, so I don't have a damn clue. A few things about a pellet smoker though. I own a Z-grill, which isn't a high end one really. I think 350ish on sale
-Grease is a real hazard in these. I use mine for pulled pork and the likes. I've set it on fire a few times this way, even after cleaning it out. I try to keep it low and not crank the heat in it due to that. It's done a lot of pork shoulder
-Expect to spend lot of time waiting on it for big meat. Pork shoulders take a ton of hours. Worth it overall though
-Hopper size is critical. That's the one thing I Find this one really lacking. I'm thinking I'll end up fabricating an addon box for it. There are aftermarket ones for a lot of them though.

I have the Weber Smokefire pellet that everyone hates and it has been pretty much flawless for me. I just handed off my weber kettle to Yaj Yak Yaj Yak so at my house I have a griddle, propane and pellet. I have zero interest in a charcoal cooker at this point. Pellet is the way to go. Webers have been great at making a ton of smoke and imparting more flavor and smoke ring compared to other brands.
