Basically for the non geeks it uses the processing power of your computer, to help 'fold' protein strings to help cure diseases. Your info is gathered and sent to Stanford to help in studies.

Basically it just uses computers from all over the world as supercomputers basically, it's pretty cool to watch and look at.

and what process are they doing?

Folding (assembling) proteins. When proteins don't "fold" correctly you end up with diseases like Alzheimers, Huntingtons, Parkinsons, cancers, and many other things.

"You can help by simply running a piece of software. Folding@Home is a distributed computing project -- people from through out the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world. Every computer makes the project closer to our goals.

Folding@Home uses novel computational methods coupled to distributed computing, to simulate problems thousands to millions of times more challenging than previously achieved."
