My daughter's 1998 Chevy Malibu 3100 V6 is making a funny noise. It's coming from the A/C compressor. When engaged, it's quiet, but when the clutch is released, it makes a spinning, metallic sound. I'm assuming the bearing is going out on the clutch.

Can these easily be replaced without removing the compressor from the engine?

you can, but it's kind of a bitch. i'd suggest removing the compressor and doing it on the bench. personally, i'd just replace the compressor and call it done.

I was just doing some more homework on this. Maybe the bearing is OK and the "air gap" is to small. Can I juts pull the hub and reset it? Or replace just the hub?

if you pull the front piece (which is the piece rubbing against the pulley), you risk blowing the charge. you have no way of recovering the freon?

You can take the car to most shops and ask them to evacuate the system. You put a compressor in and have them recharge it.
