Its a little more than just the shifter, dash cluster (analog gauges) is different, I believe 96 is the only year with a tach, although the 95 might have had it. Side view mirrors are different and iirc, something on the rear qrts is different. I was in the market a few years ago and I read up on all of it. There are a few other things I'm sure I'm forgetting.
The 96 just overall has a cleaner look imo

96's also didn't have a single cupholder.

95/96 mirrors were the same

96 was obd2 but at this point in this world an og obd1 vehicle would likely be easier to swap.

I wouldn’t get a 96 purely on emissions.

Dash, mirrors, console and shifter. 95 has it all but the analog dash.

I had a 96 impala SS black paid 2500 the major issue with them is the digital odo never works and finding one with clean buckets seats is almost impossible. Mine had clean seats but had to cut out a few pieces out of the quarter from rust damn Midwest car. I just flipped it made some money and moved on.

So wasn’t a 96.

Thankfully these days lots of repop stuff available.
