🔧 BUILD 2021 VW Atlas 2.0T AWD Family Wagon

General Information

Added a family truckster to the stable; 2021 VW Atlas 2.0T SEL AWD. With generous incentives right now, you can get a brand new one for the price of a used 2018-2019 with 20-30k miles, so I jumped on it. Can't beat the space efficiency of this car, and it's ride/handling in its class.

For 2021, VW added the 2.0T to more trim levels, and for the first time with AWD. The 2.0T sells all of its power/torque up front, so it doesn't feel any pokier than the 3.6. It needs premium for its max power ratings, but runs decent on regular. While completely anecdotal, I feel the 2.0T has a better reliability reputation than the 3.6, so was thrilled that they added AWD to the 2.0T for 2021. It's also less expensive and more fuel-efficient, but with similar gusto. The bummer is that the 2.0T doesn't come with the R-Line, which I really gushed over but didn't want the 3.6.

Also, the new Racing Green for 2021 is pretty sweet; looks black in some light, but is dark metallic green when illuminated. The bummer for 2020 and 2021 is that VW's lengthy 72-month, 72,000-mile warranty went kaput in 2019, so the factory one is only 4 years, 50,000 miles.

We used the Neuspeed on my wife's 2019 2.0t Beetle with the non DSG auto to give it that little extra oomph it was missing at full throttle. Worked well for her in that application. Bonus for being able to remove without warranty concerns and resell it later. A full tune obviously makes more power in more areas, but comes with other potential negatives.

It definitely gives extra oomph it needs. For me, the revs just hang way too much. You can tell the TCU can't keep up with the extra power. Luckily, it's only at WOT, but it makes for driving at WOT not fun. You have to downshift manually then go WOT. Even that being said, no regrets on the purchase.

I still like these, but it kills me when I read third row SUV comparisons and they do so poorly. The Kia Telluride always cleans house on those, but I’m still in the mid/late 2000’s mindset that Korean cars are gawdy trash. Granted I still know a number of people with Hyundais who have blown motors under 100k miles and gotten them replaced under warranty so I’m not completely wrong. I’ll be interested to see what the 2023 Honda Pilot brings to the table as my wife is a Honda fan.

Am I reading that correctly all you need is 93 plus APR Stage 1 tune for +66HP/+88TQ?

One of the reasons I liked the 2.0T over the six was fuel economy. Here’s a recent 86-mile, mostly highway trip, with the wife driving. 28.8 mpg, according to the trip computer. Very impressive. Especially considering the six-cylinder we owned at work chugged gas like a full-size truck.

An average speed of 44mph yielding 28.8mpg doesn't exactly seem ground breaking. My 2007 Silverado will do 25-26mpg at 45mph (flat ground) when the DoD engages. Of course that's when there are no other cars on the road where I have to keep speeding up/slowing down because people can't maintain their speed.

GF loves the Atlas. But generally thinks turbo 4-bangers are "pokey". Kinda the only reason she is sticking with the current 16 3.6R outback. But it has 175K on it so shes probably due for something new soon.

I think it's between Atlas or a manual Toyota truck (if you can still buy those).
Assuming you won't be using it for towing, absolutely get the 4cyl then tune it. I have the 3.6 because the tow-capable atlas CS can't be had with the 4cyl (2k tow rating vs 5k rating w/ the 3.6), and damn do I wish it had more power. If I didn't use it to tow, would have definitely gone with the 4cyl and tune. The trans programming also sucks in my 3.6, it's like it's lost all the time, all the more reason to get a tune

why TF would anyone want a manual toyota truck

Didn’t say it was. Comparison was between the 6 and 4 Atlas.

Keep in mind that going a steady 45 mph will yield much better mpg results than driving on roads where you may end up travelling 70mph, drop up and down a few times, maybe stop at a few lights, and still end up at an average of 45 mph. How one achieves that average of 45 mph will play a large factor in their fuel economy. :)

Yeah, I get that, but looking that dash, it was 86 miles in two hours, so not exactly breakneck speeds.

After 12,000 miles, we averaged 18 mpg in our work Atlas.
Holy crap, this is way worse than I get. When I drive like a grandma I get 23ish (lots of highway). When I tow a ~3500lb trailer I get 12-13 highway which isn't bad at all, actually slightly better than my EB dad150 was. Hell I filled up late last week and have been hauling a trailer around town for the last 5 days and still got 14 and change.

is there anything you know of that would make the v6 atlas cross sport get better fuel economy than the regular atlas, aside from a little bit of weight difference?

Not apples to apples. But our 2020 tig 4 motion after 12000, averaged 18 mpg pure city.

Just came back from a 1200 mile round trip, put highway it logged 31mpg average. 80mph cruise control. Chicago to Toronto and back.

Kinda night and day difference with mpg.
