The 8 Series Coupe will launch with two models, the M850i xDrive Coupe M Performance with a V8, and the 840d xDrive Coupe with a six-cylinder diesel. It’s a pretty safe bet that we won’t be getting the diesel, though. Both engine options will be mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

That V8 will be the 4.4-liter twin-turbo powerhouse that we know and love, offering 530 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. BMW claims that the zero to 60 sprint happens in just 3.6 seconds and that the top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

No price was announced yet, but it’s definitely going to be in the low $100,000-range.

I also cannot help but notice that the current M5 is still more powerful than the 8. Does that mean that an M8 is in the works? It’s easier than ever to build power with turbocharged engines these days. I wouldn’t be surprised if an upcoming M8 had, like, 650 HP or something.

holy fuck

$112,895. That’s where 2019 BMW M850i starts.

You’re also getting some top-shelf equipment standard, including BMW’s LaserLight LED headlights, a sixteen-speaker Harman Kardon stereo, adaptive suspension and M-sport brakes.

You’ll also get BMW Live Cockpit Professional, which I felt required to call out individually so I could address how un-creatively the company named its Audi Virtual Cockpit Knockoff.

If you really hate your money, you can also throw it away on a package that upgrades the gear selector, iDrive controller, start/stop button and audio volume knob to glass. A carbon package is also available, bringing carbon-fiber trimmings to the bumpers, diffuser, mirror caps and spoiler.

Finally, BMW offers a carbon-fiber roof. The press release notes proudly that this is the first non-M car BMW to offer such an option, as if that will factor into anyone’s buying decision in any way.

The 2019 BMW M850i xDrive goes on sale in the U.S. in December. It starts at $111,900, an almost 40 grand bump over the old 6 Series coupe, and pretty squarely into lower-end 911 territory. There aren’t a huge amount of options because it’s suitably loaded as-is, but it can hit $130,000 or so with them.

Expensive, yes, but suitably grander than the old 6 was. And anything this huge and nice that can be anywhere near M5 territory is hugely impressive.

Any BMW with an 8 in the name has a lot to live up to, and the 850i does. A somewhat ordinary interior does little to dull the appeal of this grand tourer. And like the Man of Steel, it’s capable of a lot more than the business-suit demeanor implies.
