The best details, believe me

Although the heavy duty segment is much smaller than the standard duty portion, there’s a certain buyer who will always have things to tow and large mounds of whatever it may be to haul. Chevrolet has answered this call with the Silverado HD, and at one point, the Suburban 2500 HD.

But the 3/4-ton Suburban HD faded away with the new Tahoe and Suburban redesign, and we haven’t heard much about it since. The folks over at Cheers & Gears have been keeping a close eye on the General Motors VIN decoder, and found a new VIN has been created for a 2016 Suburban HD.

The new 3/4-ton Suburban HD may merely be an uprated 1500, considering the 5.3-liter V8 is the only engine listed as offered in the document, but it’s a good possibility the SUV will feature an upgraded suspension package, per spy shots showing the SUV testing in Colorado. The HD trim also seems to only be available for 4×4, LS and LT variants of the SUV, reserving the LTZ trim for a more luxurious offering.

We’ve reached out to Chevrolet for comment on this matter and they responded to our request officially stating the HD will be offered solely for fleet buyers and will not become a new trim for the Suburban range as things currently stand, laying the speculation to rest.

General Motors will reportedly also offer the current-generation Chevrolet Cruze and Malibu for fleet buyers through the addition of a Limited trim after the next-generation cars are revealed this year. In the meantime, consumers can still turn to the fully-capable Silverado HD to service their heavy duty needs.

2016 Chevrolet Suburban HD will be 3/4 Ton; Fleet Only

The other day we reported that Chevrolet will be releasing an HD version of the Suburban for 2016 model year. Sorry to get your hopes up as we are now getting word that the HD will be built, but only for fleet buyers. Now that doesn't mean you'll be able to pick up a Suburban HD from National Car Rental during your family trip to Disney World, but if you are a fleet buyer for the US Secret Service or one of the Oil Fracking companies, you just may have a new tool available for your arsenal.

We received official word today from a GM representative that the Suburban HD will only be available to Commercial and Government fleets. However he also referred to the Suburban HD as "...the 3/4 ton Suburban..." which answers our question as to whether the Suburban HD is an uprated 1500 or a full 2500. This could mean more engine choices or it may not. More details will be shared as they become available.

In spite of the HD branding, the Suburban 2500 is returning.

so uh

i just learned something about these things...

basically... they are 3500 suburbans if we want to get fancy.

4405lb payload capacity is where shit gets crazy- mainly because these things are likely supposed to be armored.

but here's the shit part... towing capacity... 3,000lbs....

all of the payload capacity sacrifices the rated towing capacity... i don't doubt that it'd be totally fine to pull nearly whatever with it... but just weird that it's actually rated at just 3k.

a quote from another forum regarding it:

Its a GMT-800 Suburban HD frame for the most part, with GMT-900 2011+up HD hubs and wheels, has no factory installed hitch that I can see in the catalog, has the GMT-800/900 9.25" split case front axle (used from 1999-2010). GVWR is 11,000lbs so its actually a 3500 Suburban not a 2500. Payload is its specialty rather than towing though. 4405lbs payload. Perfect for government/railroad/municipal/school bus usage.

Now, I could be wrong about the frame, but looking at the illustrations in the catalog, its the same as the last Suburban 2500.

also worth mentioning is speed inc got their hands on one... and put a maggy on it.
