As seen in the diagram above, the turbocharger shaft is supported by two ball bearing assemblies. These again are fed with engine oil, but no longer rely on a thin film of oil over a wide area to support the turbocharger shaft.
The result is an outstanding reduction of frictional torque on the rotating turbocharger assembly in contrast to the old fashioned floating metal bushes. The improvement in turbocharger response, particularly in the lower to mid turbocharger speed range is phenomenal.

i dont think it being ball bearing or not has to do with how it is cooled.

not all BB are water cooled. most are still just oil.

Still prefer journal bearings better. you can actually replace journal bearings if they wear out...

true, and alot of people that use liquid cooled BB turbos only end up hooking up the oil lines. Precision Turbo turns down warranty work all the time because that. Its not a big deal to plumb it on a 3800, just route the heater hose outlet to the turbo and back.

For cost and availability of standard journal bearing units, they get my vote as well.

I have seen this car roll around town Sounded nice. It was real quiet I didn't even know it was turbo until he rolled into the throttle a little and heard the spool. I was like wtf looked stock and sounded as stock as it gets. Never would have known he proly lives around the corner.
