Again, we're looking at this through the eyes of 30 years of development and the LS wonder engine. Back in 1990, that wasn't "bad". Not great, but not "bad" either.

It being a Big Block, it's more the torque they can make. As others have posted, it was very neutered from the factory for emissions purposes. Put a decent cam in, better flowing heads, bump the compression, and some exhaust work, makes big gains.

I mean...the 351 in the Ford was making more power during the same period...

yeah and then it still won't keep up with a stock 5.0 or 3.5 ford, or a 6.2 gm or a properly geared 5.3

these really don't do much for me.

hate me.

Inclined to agree overall I'd much rather have a Sy/Ty even if the transmissions are kind of glassy. (ED:fuck:treed)

Even that was really under sized in terms of head/cam/turbo even with what was available in the day. They could have been at another 100HP above where they were with minimal reconfiguration using parts that were available at the time (e.g. L35 heads, L35 cam and a bigger turbo.)

There's definitely potential in the 454SS Trucks, it's just the idea of bringing it out is going to require some work. The stock stuff isn't exactly anything to write home about. You're going to need a full exhaust, cam, valvesprings and probably an intake. If you're serious about it you're going to want either a turbo or some kind of supercharger.

well

that ended quickly

If the 454SS made 100 more horsepower from the factory, I'd say it'd be a little bit of a different story...by 1991,it had all the ingredients for an awesome street truck...stout(ish) 4-speed, 14-bolt (albeit with 5 lug axles) with 4.10's, and a large cube motor...only thing letting it down is the junky ass heads and tiny cam, which for a couple of grand, can be addressed.

even still, in that similar truck world, im finding a clean 03-06 silverado or sierra, or a clean 5.4 supercharged lightning before im diving into any of that.

For that kinda money I'm probably getting a Sy/Ty and then DDing an 03-06 with a Whipple. If I'm doing that generation truck I'm probably starting out with something that has some miles and would have a nasty Detroit Diesel turbo on it.

The 454 is certainly workable even with peanut port heads oddly. I would really want forced induction but the cam is the first place to look on one of these. The specs I found looking seem to be this:

Adv. Dur.:280*/292* .050" Dur.:193*/204* Cam (lobe) Lift:.234"/.253" Valve Lift:.398"/.430" L/S:120* ICL:108*

flat out terrible to feed an engine like this. That's like the cam they used in the 305 HOs with a wider LSA. It's also with 100 more cubes to feed.

that cam is abysmal, fuck.
