Head Rebuild

Between work, waiting on some parts, and it being hot as balls outside, I've been slacking a bit. But the head is rebuilt and back on the engine.

I pulled it apart and ran it through the parts washer to degrease it. It's clean, but not perfect. Since I plan on totally rebuilding the engine in the next year or two, I didn't go crazy with cleaning it or decking it.

I lapped the factory valves and installed some Viton valve seals. Cleaned the OEM rockers, added some revised Topline lifters and some Manley valve springs. I had Delta Cams regrind my OEM cams to a HKS 272 spec, which should be plenty for the stock bottom-end. When I do the built bottom end, I'm likely going to go with some more aggressive 280s.

I also went with a composite Fel-Pro head gasket and ARP studs for now. Because the head and block weren't decked, I didn't want to risk using and ruining an expensive MLS gasket. This composite gasket should hold plenty of power and act as a fuse in case I get too aggressive with the tune.

Little update:

I was originally planning on building a stainless turbo manifold since there really aren't many options for RWD 4G63s. I made a post on an FB group dedicated to RWD conversions, looking to see if someone already has a manifold they're willing to sell isntead.

As it turns out, the Honda F23 engines have an almost identical exhaust flange as the 4G63 - so $140 later, I have a cast t3 turbo manifold. I just need to elongate a few holes and do a little port matching. But man, what a time saver this will be - especially since I've never TIG'd stainless in my life.

This is a huge load off my mind. Building a manifold would have been a pain in the dick. This will definitely help me get this thing together and running sooner, and will be perfect for something like an hx35 or hx40 turbo. Once it's running and driving, then I'll worry about upgrading.

Well bad news and good news.

Bad news is that I've decided to hold off on the 4G63 for now. I'm going to mothball the rwd-specific parts and save them for a different chassis(probably a non-SVO Mustang). So this specific thread will be defunct...Stand by for a new one, though.

Good news is that the SVO will be staying Ford-powered, 4-cylinder, and turbo. Just no Lima involved.
