i can see it happening more on leased vehicles then purchased ones. at least on your average car. low mile lease, drive the piss out of it, swap in low mile cluster for service and turn in.

I'm far too lazy to swap clusters back and forth. Plus I drive Ford's. The last thing I want to do is take interior panels apart to introduce even more squeeks and rattles.

People suck. Now I don't feel as bad about buying a brand new daily driver and taking a big depreciation hit.

There's over 236 million registered vehicles in the US. That means that less than 1% have had this done. I will say it's probably something that is way under enforced in terms of ripoffs though.

I see it multiple times per week when appraising cars. Looking at the Autocheck can typically tell you when it was done based on the title dates and the mileage discrepancies.

Other tip offs are extremely worn steering wheels, pedals, etc... But on a 10+ year old car with 220k or 110k, those can look similar.

we've gotten burned a few times. luckily didnt loose on it, but didnt make what we had expected to on the flip.

with all the cluster issues a GMT800 has, its gotta be north of 50% of the ones i run into are rolled back. and when i was shopping for mine, some of these guys get really shitty with you when you ask for the VIN. lol, like welp, im no longer interested.
