i get to play with fatty nerd boxes at worky now too. terabytes of data and 24-96+ (to +++) cores

I know you made a thread about it, but why did you go with the i5 over the i7? I'm looking to upgrade to quad core and DDDR3 but don't have much experience with intel CPUs. I was looking at the Phenom II's but have heard mixed reviews. I don't game or anything, but I do work with CS5 and watch movies a lot and want something a bit faster then the old Athlon X2 5000+.

you have to write code to parallelize things well and rarely do you scale out linearly with cores, and never in the architecture of a normal pc. the i5 and i7 have the same number of cores but with hyperthreading you get 4 more virtual cores. which i think requires even more programming talent to optimize. for anything else i do i consider the performance satisfactory anyway, ie. the rare times i edit a video or something. i was playing crysis at the time and here are some benches:

crysis: clock matters more, and HT is a lil better

even today the i5 is $80 or so cheaper, back then it was a bit more. stock clock is 3.3 ghz with 1 core turbo to 3.7 ghz, then 3.6 for the 2nd, etc. the k model lets all cores clock to whatever you set on turbo. i've settled at 4.8 ghz for everyday usage, i don't think it's too big a deal to get 4.9 or 5.0 but i've left it at this.

surely either will be quicker than your current rig but you should check out the performance for the apps you use to determine whether the i7 is worth it or not.

The pain mainly just the hassle of setting up a brand new system with a new OS and getting all my shit safely transferred - leaving the simplicity of a single logical hard drive in favor of a system drive/storage drive that you need to kind of situate right (move program directories around and whatnot)
My SSD is 120gb and I wouldn't really suggest anything smaller if you actually do anything with your PC. One thing that took me some time to find out is you need to have the Windows 7 install disk that already has SP1 on it or newer for it to install. I tried a bunch of roundabout ways with the older windows7 disc without success.

Worth it though - it's faster than shit! The P.O.S.T. and pre-boot stuff takes a good 10+ seconds like any typical computer but as soon as you get to loading the OS you blink your eyes and the computer's waiting for you lol

Yeah like I said, just need to make sure you have >windows7SP1 installer disk or you're in for a lot of shit. the pre SP1 7 installed doesn't work right with it even if you use the updates and all that.
yeah it's a Revo2? 120gb pci-e2 x4

The only reason I even got a new system was to run the Revo. My old socket 775 system only had one pci-e slot which I obviously used for the vid card.

I'm sure i have pics around here somewhere. As cool as all that below is, I have to say my favorite thing is my Dlink DIR-655 router. So far I've seen peak transfer speeds of 117MB/s, and avg transfer speeds in the 100MB/s range. Damn impressive home network, blows my works network out of the water.
