Dont bother w/ FP3 today. Its was a wash. Literally.

Quali was semi-interesting tho.

I do love Spa tho. Such a great track. One of my favorites to drive in GT7 in VR

So, nothing remarkable in terms of racing today. However the top three did finish within a few seconds of each other. The next three were a few seconds behind, but also were within a second or two of each other. If both of those packs had all be together it could have made for some "rubbing is racing" action for the 5-10 laps. I nodded off once around the middle of the race, so AFAIK, no safety cars or VSC. For Spa, that's impressive.

1.5 kg too light... That's all it took to waste the whole weekends effort. Makes me wonder what part(s) they changed that dropped the minimum weight too low.

From the article:
"However, a Technical Delegate’s Report released after the race stated that, while the car had initially been found to be compliant with the minimum weight of 798kg, 2.8 litres of fuel were then removed. The report then reads: “The car was not fully drained according to the draining procedure submitted by the team in their legality documents as TR Article 6.5.2 is fulfilled.

As this is 1.5 kg below the minimum weight requested in TR Article 4.1, which also has to be respected at all times during the competition, I am referring this matter to the stewards for their consideration.

After being referred to the stewards, it was confirmed that Russell had been disqualified from the race. As such, Hamilton is promoted to P1, while Oscar Piastri now takes P2 and Charles Leclerc moves up to P3."

Does kind of explain Toto's expression right right after Russell won the race. I wonder if he knew about it. A comment from another site which gives an example of the gains that can be made when you're just 1.5 kg lighter:

"1kg = around 0.1 seconds on an average lap. Assume average lap is 3.3 miles. Therefore at Spa (4.3 miles) , the gain would have been around 0.13 seconds per lap or 8.6 + seconds over a race distance. There are a lot of assumptions in there, but a general sense of scale of advantage."

I am going to put this under a spoiler tag, since it contains race results. But the graphics show the value of having Perez on your team:

I don’t know how they would do it, but the FIA should be penalizing the constructor, not the driver. Yes, it gave a performance gain during the race, but I don’t think Russell went and removed 1.5 kg on his own. Like grid penalties for exceeding part limits. Tsunoda had a 60 place penalty. Technically he was starting in last place, back at Silverstone.

I mean, he was given an unfair advantage, so it’s the right call. But, it should be a heavy penalty on Mercedes for sure.

They lost the points, but let’s say you’re 200 pts ahead of everyone else. Not much of an impact. Your driver loses the win and gets scrubbed from the records, like number of laps led. I didn’t see if there was a financial penalty to the team.

Should have had a seat with RB

RB deserves to lose the constructor championship in both 2024 and 2025 for passing on Sainz. I have to think they could have still signed him as recently as a week ago, when it was obvious they were in trouble and perez can't perform.

mclaren is good at managing/recruiting drivers and developing a car, they deserve to win

perez was the perfect 2nd driver when they signed him and he's been good up until this year (he had issues last year but still finished 2nd), but with an expired contract and questionable/poor performance in the second half of 2023 and first half of 2024, and Sainz being available, Perez' extension is an unforgivable mistake. I hope another team (mclaren) shows them this.

The unexpected decision to retain Perez has left many in the Formula One community speculating as to the reasons behind it, with some pointing to alleged interference from the FIA and Formula One rights holders Liberty Media.

Read this a few places, and I could totally see it being true. They didn't want him fired due to the resulting poor turnout for the mexico GP.
