maybe i don't understand the full story behind your motivation to get another car is...maybe you are more geared towards getting something a bit more modern and peppier than the camry than something with better mileage.

Thanks for doing the price breakdown for the gas mileage. Gas mileage was only part of the reason...I just want something different...the Formula is nice but it's all setup for drag racing...always on slicks/skinnies etc. It is more of a toy/cruiser than anything. The Camry is ok, but I've just always wanted something that handles well and is still quick. Also, my little brother is going to be driving soon, so I was going to give the Camry to him to use until he decides to purchase a car.

If u want a gti let me know. I work for Anderson VW in Crystal Lake. As far as DSG's they cant handle much more than stock hp and the service is pretty damn expensive. Recalls as of now are coils and air bag wiring.all depends on what year u get though.

if its just the mileage alone then i don't see how spending 10k on another car is financially sound...

figure your camry gets 20mpg. 15 gallon tank for ease of comparison

figure a commute of 50 miles a day, 5 days a week, 180 days a 'school year'...so thats 9000 miles at an average of 20mpg which means you went through 450 gallons of gas at 4$ a gallon figure 1800 dollars.

lets say you get another car that gets 40 mpg...
50miles a day, 180 school days at an average of 40mpg so thats 225 gallons of gas at 4$ a gallon thats 900 bucks with a savings of 900 dollars per school year.

lets say you are going to school for anesthesiology and will be commuting that mileage for 13 years...

with your camry, you'd spend 23,400 dollars on gas
with the new car, 11,700...

a savings of 11,700.

it took ya 10 years to make up for that initial investment of 10,000.

now there may be other options, such as vehicle age...a 2004 will "hopefully" last longer than your 92, althoguh from what i've seen...i do a lot less work on early 90s cars than i do 2000+ cars....could be the lack of obdii though lol

not trying to sway you, but its a pet peeve of mine when people say that they want to get a new car due to gas mileage alone...i know you said something peppier and fun

now for a recommendation: cruze! gangster lil cars, awesome warranty, somewhat peppy but very comfortable car. probably sucks in the winter but some BLIZZAKS would fix that ey?

Thank you for saying what I was going to say! Don't get how someone is looking to drop over 10k on a daily car but wont consider others because the gas mileage isnt very good.... keep the car you got and put 10k towards gas lol

anyways OP, keep the car you got or get something cheaper, trust me, I commuted my last year to NIU and put 30k miles between my "beater" cars in 3 semesters, between a 97 i4 ga gt and an 00 I30 v6 and the i30 got like 2mpg less than the ga, i didnt care, still better than racking up miles and miles on a car.... keep the beater until you are done or find something better for minimal cost to move up from what you have now

just imho

I've been really happy with my GTI for the past year that I've owned it. Just went stage 1 tuning on it, and it felt like a true injection of steroids. Gets me 30 mpg on the highway, and about 26/27 commuting with mixed city driving. Aggressive driving can bring that down, of course. It gets about 5mpg better on avg than my old WRX, and about the same as my old Mini Cooper S. Had a few things done under warranty, but has never left me stranded. I would second the motion of getting an extended service plan or certified warranty, though, just so expenses/repairs down the road don't drain your bank account. Anyway, it has a great solid feel to it, good utility, quick and fun to drive, and I look forward to driving it every day while my F-body wonders why I don't drive it as much. 2009's and up have the TSI motor that won't have the cam follower issues, but I have checked and changed mine without any issues. I'm really happy with the 6 speed manual, and therefore don't have any firsthand experience with the DSG.

I just bought a 2011 GTI and it is amazing. Have an intake and tune and I'm up about 60 hp on stock and almost 80hp with the 100 octane tune. If you go up to Lukes ever I can let you check it out. I got a manual cause I wanted it and also cause DSG is hit or miss. Both transmissions have their draw backs. The clutch is already too weak for the tune. Only rated for 250 ft# but the tune puts out 300

Agreed. I burst someones bubble at work buy telling them that when they downsized from a V6 Altima to a Corolla.
