The 2.5 turbo engines crack ringlands which takes out everything. Generally it's the #4 cylinder but #3 is common also.

My bosses car did this with stage 2 power (turbo back, intake and tune) it has 40k on it. prevents car did the same thing at I think 60k.

anyone know the cause of this? I was just going to purchase this because I think it would be a good dd with enough power. I don't really have any interest in modding it other than maybe exhaust for sound. But, this seem like its a problem with people tuning them around here.

'cheaper' Boxer motor so one side of the ring has more pressure than the other side ever gets? I could be TOTALLY off, but I swear I read something similar

P&L is your best bet for a tune but they're pricey and kind of dicks.

There's a local Subaru guy Andy who does awesome tunes that have made some good power.

Or you could waste money on a Cobb access port ($600) but it'll be a safe off the shelf tune.

So are you saying don't buy a subaru?

As long as you know the risks. If you can honestly just put a catback on and leave it 100% alone then I wouldn't be worried. If you plan on driving the piss out if it and/or modding it any further then just don't be surprised when it goes. A new SB is $2k plus gaskets, pan, oil cooler so it's a minimum of say $2800 if you do it yourself. Built engine is gonna cost over $5k and only last 30-50k miles because forged pistons ovalize the cylinder walls.

Isn't the ring land issue partly due to cylinder 4 being right next to the exhaust manifolds and turbo and it gets a lot warmer than the other cylinders?

Been poking around at subarus lately trying to find a cheap one for a daily and have found that

#4 is on the drivers side in the back.

Most people believe it to be either the intake manifold or the fact that Subaru advanced the timing of #4 a few degrees for early detection of knock (knock sensor is above 4) so when it has knock; #4 gets it first.

In reality Subaru spec'd a shitty piston for the ej257 and 255.
