I wonder if I could drag my house a few miles over the border to WI. IL is really quite the POS state to live in.

Everyone should write their representatives. I've done this numerous times through congress.org.

Thank you to all the brilliant people that voted for Quinn!! The guy is a true moron. How about looking at stuff that really matters like pensions and bloated Gov't spending? No instead we are going to try to take more from the taxpayers.

I would say that it wouldn't be impossible for the government to get those records. I would say that it is unlikely they're going to follow through with this though. That is a ton of work, but it would definitely be a money maker if they could make it practical.

the amount of resources the state would have to use to obtain records would cost more than the taxes "owed" to them.

I'm not saying I disagree with you, but I don't think there is enough information right now (to the general public) to determine if it is a worthwhile effort. Going public with this information leads me to believe one of two things:

1) They're doing this to scare people into paying sales tax on-line and don't plan on carrying out this plan.

OR

2) They've done the analysis on cost/benefit and they believe it to be profitable.

I can't see the government committing to doing this if they aren't going to make any money.

Even if the state of IL obtains records ... how are people going to be able to tell for sure that the records are correct? I know I don't have receipts from 6 years ago to verify total amounts.....

Aye.

It won't happen, it can't happen. How can Illinois obtain records for purchasses made to a company in Ohio (Summit)? Summit will tell them to go scratch and the Ohio law won't do a thing.

Again, the federal government has a ban on internet sales that state and local governments cannot break. It probably showed up in the news as a sound-bite from someone throwing ideas around to balance the Illinois budget.
