just like any pet, you have to clean the cage out once or twice a week. on the bottom of the cage there is a sliding tray that catch all the poop and food for easy cleaning. the african grey does not scream like other parrot. they are more into mimicing sound and talking. as far as their intelligent they are as smart as a 5 year old kid. life span is 60 plus year. i think your mom will like him. check out on youtube video on these bird.

I once had a Quaker Parrot, they are the smallest of the talking birds ( I think ). Had him for about 3 years. We got a Dachshund puppy ( named Flash )

The bird got out of his cage, walked across the house and climbed a baby gate to where we had him confined. Well he ate the bird, well almost all of it. My wife was so upset over this that she said that we could never have another bird again.

If it weren't for that I'd find the money and buy your bird for sure.
I loved having a bird.

I'm convinced this dog has bad breath because the bird cursed him as he was eating her. Poor bird.
