AFC is just that, Air/Fuel control, not spark advancement/retardation.
V-AFC is what most people use for super basic Honda tuning, Very easy to use with just a Wideband.

Nice doesn't sound too turdish at all. Why not go with the Volvo twin cam head instead of the lame sohc?
they dont bolt exactly up. close, but they need some machining if i'm not mistaken.
