DRAPER, Utah – A death row inmate who had used a gun to fatally shoot two men suffered the same fate Friday morning as he was executed by a team of marksmen — the first time Utah used the firing squad to carry out a death sentence in 14 years.

A barrage of bullets tore into Ronnie Lee Gardner's chest where a target was pinned over his heart. Two minutes later an ashen Gardner, blood pooling in his dark blue jumpsuit, was pronounced dead at 12:17 a.m.

He was the third man to die by firing squad since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated capital punishment in 1976.

Unlike Gary Gilmore, who famously uttered the last words "Let's do it" on Jan. 17, 1977, Gardner could muster few words before a black hood was fastened over his head. Asked if he had anything to say during the two minutes afforded him, Gardner said simply, "I do not, no."

The five executioners, certified police officers who volunteered for the task and remain anonymous, stood about 25 feet away, behind a wall cut with a gunport, and were armed with matching .30-caliber Winchester rifles. One was loaded with a blank so no one knows who fired the fatal shot. Sandbags stacked behind Gardner's chair kept the bullets from ricocheting around the cinderblock room.

That's crazy! Apparently he chose to meet his maker via a firing squad before it was made illegal. But then he later decided he didn't want to do in that manner, and his plea to change it was overturned. It's great because he had killed his victims with a gun, so it's real eye-for-an-eye stuff.

I still do not get the point of one gun having a blank in it, if the guys are signing up to shoot the guy I am pretty sure they will not be remorseful afterwards...........

I didn't get that either, they did volunteer to shoot someone. The only thing I could think of is that maybe later in their lives, they may regret making that decision. They can then think that there is a possibility that they had the blank and did not kill that person.

I'd go out by a firing squad but not how that went down. I want to stand up against a wall and get shot by like 10 people. Not 1 bullet. That ain't gangsta!

But it wasn't just one bullet.

A barrage of bullets tore into Ronnie Lee Gardner's chest where a target was
pinned over his heart.

Only one of the rifles had blanks. The others were fully loaded and fired multiple shots.

I'm not sure that I could unless I was a relative or friend to the victim. Even then, I don't know if I have the killer instinct. I used to go to the gun range with my step-dad a lot and I have fired many many rounds. But I don't know that I could fire upon a human being without severe provocation.

No, I would never sign up for that. There is no pride in killing someone like that.

But there is when you give them an injection, or pump them full of 1,000,000 gigawatts? Not saying I personally would sign up for any of it... but I don't see a problem with the firing squad method vs. any of the other methods. Betting its one of the most cost effective methods out there.
