3 hours later...figured out how to remove the pan without removing the engine...what a pain in the ass though!

I had to remove the front lower mount and bracket that attached to the motor. Tehn the balancer has to come off (the motor can be lowered enough with the mount gone to remove it without lowering the cradle.)

Drop the pan so it's hanging (It WONT come out the bottom). remove the oil pump PU, then the gasket...pan will slide out the front through the wheel well.

My car has been leaking a serious amount of oil...and I had to do this. This has got to be the shittiest job on a car I've done in years. It's been leaking for several months, so you can imagine the mess down there...and that's on top of all the CV grease on everything from a blown axle seal!

I have a new pan gasket that was supposed to be here today, but Fed Ex couldn't find my house. I gave them a piece of my mind, hopefully they can find my house tomorrow.

I never tried it; I heard it was not possible...but I remember Dave Norris said he did it before. It would almost be easier to just pull the motor though. It's going to be challenge to reinstall it though.

Think I found where it was leaking. It was towards the firewall side where the timing cover met the pan. Seemed it leaked more on a slight incline, so that makes sense. I tried limping it along with that no-leak stuff...worked for 2 days, then started leaking worse.

I also have a major oil burning problem, I have to do new valve seals too. Car was parked for awhile, so it's no real surprise.

I'm hoping to get this thing somehow buttoned up this weekend between stuff.

not surprised you were the first to figure out how to replace the oil pan gasket without pulling the motor.

ron does good work, however hes not the first to do this....this is common practice for most anyone wanting to change the oil pan gasket.

most of the time when the pan gasket gets as bad as ron decribes his, most cars have the rear main leaking as well....which is why people remove the engine or trans to do the job......either way its a PITA job that gets very dirty!

It would be a lot easier with a lift...

I am crawling at a snails pace with progress; but I'm also cleaning as I go. Got the timing cover off and back on today. I had a spare oil pan in better shape than mine, so I hammered out the dents and repainted it. Should be done tomorrow, depends if we are taking each kid to the doctor tomorrow...looks like we have an outbreak of scarlet fever going on.

I have seen mechanics work... not impressed... half of them arent even ASE certified.. lmao

where at NTB?

you get pretty cocky for a guy that works at autozone :dunno:

ase means only one thing, you know how to study for a test, and pass it, and i sure james will agree here.

what seperates a good mechanic from the rest is work experience, and the ablity to troubleshoot problems, and dig into a job, and 'wing' it by trying something different you've never done; like ron did

atx/mtx arent bad at all man been a few years since i took it but i'm sure youll do fine

they tell ya to scedule the L tests by themselves.....i followed that advice and was out of there in 45 minutes i coulda fucking sceduled another two tests at the least lol

those tests are far from (random under load missfire on GM hei2 engine what is the most likely cause-cracks in hall effect sensor magnet creating false trigger points)

a test like that would have me believe in ASE certified people...the fact that i know a few dumbshits that have tried to take brakes/exhaust/etc (minimum for auto tech patch) 2-4 times and not passed....now thats fuckin scary

I could have taken the ASE tests when I was working PT at Trak Auto (shows you how long ago...lol).

Probably should have.

Anyway, I quit about 6pm last night and sat on my ass the rest of the evening. I've had a bad cold for 2 weeks, so hanging out on the cold garage floor isn't helping it. I'm going to spend a couple of hours cleaning up the coolant and oil off the floor and rest of the subframe then starting up again this afternoon.
